AGRICULTURAL EXTEN$10N SERVICE

NORTYI CAROLINA STATE UNIVERSITY AT RALEIGH

P. 0. BOx
Concord, North Carolina 2802~
February 2~,' 1~77

SUBJECT: Proposal for "Cross County~Extension Agent

J. Paul Bowles, Cobarrus County ~gricultural Extension Agent, is retiring February 28.
His counterpart in Stanly County is retiring on the same date.

To supply more subject matter expertise in filling these two'positionS the State-
Extension Administration would like, with approval of commissioners of both counties,
to employ "cross county" agents.

~e proposed plan would locate au agent inStanly County to do dairy work in .both
Stanly and Cobarrus Counties. In exchange for dairy work received, the agent located
in Cabarrus County would do swine work in both counties. The Cabarrus agent would
also do beef cattle work in Cabarrus only.

There would be no split salaries. Cabarrus County would pay about fifty percent of
the salary of the agent located in Cabarrus and the state would do the same.

This ~cross county" plan is in operation in several counties in North Carolina and is
quite satisfactory. In addition to an agent having opportunity to become more
qualified in a subject matter, it would be easier for hi~ to draw upon more specialists
and research people for a two-county program.
