The combined
Federal and State budget is expected to be approximately one million dollars
over the two-year period. The purposes of the study will include identifying
water resources projects, programs and studies which should be imple~nted
within the next 15-25 years.
The North Carolina Water Resources Framework Study, which is now
off the press, presents ~ broad overview of water-related problems, needs
and development alternatives across the State. The southeast~s first Level B
Study will deal with the Yadkin-Pee Dee Basin. T~adeoffs between various
alternatives will be examined in more detail than in the Framework Study and
some preliminary cost estimates will be made. The citizens of the basin are
close to the needs and problems in the region, ~nd it is necessary that they
be i~volved In setting priorities and objectives for the Level B Study. Local
governments are also involved in water resources ~ssues, which include every-
thing from recreatio~ to water supply to industrial development.
We plan to work closely with the Citizens Advisory Committee
throughout the study. The CAC will be divided into three geographical units,
each of approximately 25 members appointed by the Secretary of the Department
of Natural and Economic Resources. ~alf the committee members will be designees
of local, county and regional governments. The others will represent a cross
section of imterests in the basin. Membership of the upper two units will be
built upon the existing Yadkin-Pee Dee CAC, which was organized in 1974. The
at~ached map sho~s the study area. Members ~ill be asked to serve initial terms
of two years. Each CAC unit will meet at least quarterly through the duration
of the two-year study and may continue after the study period.
