348 <br /> <br /> The Board asked that a meeting be set up later in the week for the <br />Board to meet with representatives of the Federal Aviation Administration <br />regarding the proposed airport. <br /> UPON MOTION of Chairman Lentz, seconded by Cox~issioner Payne and <br />unanimously carried, the Board adopted the following Proclamation. <br /> <br />PROCLAMATION <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, Special Olympics International, the governing body of the <br />Special Olympics Program, is the world's largest sports program for mentally <br />retarded children and adults. This program provides year-round training and <br />competition in twenty-two official sports to over one million special <br />athletes in over 20,000 co~unities nationwide; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, law enforcement officers in Cabarrus County and across the <br />United States have donated their time and energy to support and promote the <br />Special Olympics program; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS this, the second annual North Carolina Law Enforcement Torch <br />Run in support of Special Olympics will begin in Charlotte on May 11, 1988 <br />at 9:00 a.m. and culminate at Fetzer Field on the campus of the University <br />of North Carolina at Chapel Hill on May 13, signaling the start of the State <br />Special Olympics Summer Games; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, Deputy Sheriffs of Cabarrus County and Police Officers of the <br />cities of Concord and Kannapolis, in a show of their united support of this <br />worthwhile program, will carry the torch of the Special Olympics through <br />Cabarrus County and the municipalities of Concord and Kannapolis on May 11, <br />1988, in recognition of the accomplishments of the Special Olympians; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, it is important to remember that, in Special Olympics, every- <br />one who participates is indeed a winner. <br /> <br /> NOW, THEREFORE, I, James W. Lentz, Chairman of the Board of Cabarrus <br />County Commissioners, do hereby proclaim Wednesday, May 11, 1988, as <br /> <br />"Law Enforcement Torch Run Day in Cabarrus County" <br /> <br />AND FURTHERMORE, I extend my gratitude and appreciation to officers of the <br />Cabarrus County Sheriff's Department, the Concord Police Department and the <br />Kannapolis police Department, for lending their support to such a meaningful <br />and worthwhile cause. <br /> <br />This the 2nd day of May, 1988. <br /> <br />/s/ James W.
