January 6, 2014 (Work Session) Page 1867 <br />WHEREAS, a recent 2013 OREd Study, attached, shows growth is <br />particularly strong in the Northwest section of the County, where Cox Mill <br />Elementary and Odell Elementary are located and already over capacity; <br />WHEREAS, the board has already done redistricting to partially <br />alleviate over capacity; <br />WHEREAS, there is an immediate need for adequate school facilities to <br />accommodate expected additional student population growth which is not <br />currently available in Northwest Cabarrus County; <br />WHEREAS, Cabarrus County is obligated to provide adequate school <br />facilities for Cabarrus County residents by providing funding for <br />constructing new, expanding or renovating various school buildings and <br />facilities in Cabarrus County; and <br />WHEREAS, the site selection committee intends to recommend a school <br />site in January 2014 for a new 1,000 seat elementary school in Northwest <br />Cabarrus County; <br />WHEREAS, the new school needs to be complete by the beginning of the <br />2015 -2016 school year. As shown on the attached schedule, construction needs <br />to begin no later than August 1, 2014. <br />NOW, THEREFORE, the Cabarrus County Board of Education unanimously <br />requests the Cabarrus County Board of Commissioners immediately provide funds <br />for construction of this new elementary school in the amount of $20,000,000. <br />Adopted this the 9 th day of December, 2013. <br />/s/ Blake Kiger <br />Chair, Board of Education <br />ATTEST: <br />/s/ Barry C.
