April 15, 2013 (Regular Meeting) Page 1497 <br />® Emphasizing the importance of older adults and their leadership by <br />publicly recognizing their continued achievements <br />® Presenting opportunities for older adults to share their wisdom, <br />experience, and skills <br />® Recognizing older adults as a valuable asset in strengthening the <br />Cabarrus County communities <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Cabarrus County Board of <br />Commissioners do hereby proclaim May 2013 to be Older Americans Month. We <br />urge Cabarrus County citizens to take time this month to recognize older <br />adults, adults with disabilities and the people who serve and support them as <br />vital citizens who greatly contribute to the community. <br />Adopted this the 15 day of April, 2013. <br />/s/ Elizabeth F. Poole, Chairman <br />Cabarrus County Board of Commissioners <br />(C -6) BOC - Guardian Ad Litem Child Advocate Month Proclamation <br />Chairman Poole read the proclamation proclaiming May 2013 as Guardian <br />Ad Litem Child Advocate Month aloud. <br />UPON MOTION of Commissioner Burrage, seconded by Commissioner Measmer <br />and unanimously carried, the Board adopted the following proclamation: <br />Proclamation No. 2013 -05 <br />Proclamation <br />Guardian Ad Litem Child Advocate Month <br />April 2013 <br />WHEREAS, the North Carolina Guardian ad Litem Program, celebrating 30 years <br />of child advocacy, has established a distinguished record of public service <br />through its work to enhance the quality of life for abused and neglected <br />children, and <br />WHEREAS, Cabarrus County has a Guardian ad Litem program; and <br />WHEREAS, Guardian ad Litem volunteers come from a variety of professional, <br />educational and ethnic backgrounds, acting as advocates for abused and <br />neglected children in the - complicated and often unfamiliar court and child <br />welfare systems; and <br />WHEREAS, the court appoints Guardian ad Litem advocates to serve as officers <br />of the court, helping to improve the quality of information presented, by <br />acting as the court's eyes and ears in the child's life; and <br />WHEREAS, April has been proclaimed Child Abuse Prevention Month, an <br />observance that reflects the purpose of the Guardian ad Litem program, to <br />protect and defend children from harm and ensure that abused and neglected <br />children are provided with the court - ordered services they need; and <br />WHEREAS, April is recognized annually in the United States as a time to honor <br />the contributions Guardian ad Litem child advocates that have donated more <br />than 491,000 hours of service to children in North Carolina in 2012; <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Cabarrus County Board of <br />Commissioners do hereby proclaim April 2013 to be Guardian Ad Litem Child <br />Advocate Month. We urge Cabarrus County citizens to seek enhanced quality of <br />life and safety for abused and neglected children in our community, to <br />reflect on the service volunteered by child advocates and thank those who are <br />already volunteering their time and effort. <br />Adopted this the 15 day of April, 2013. <br />/s/ Elizabeth F.
