April 15, 2013 (Regular Meeting) Page 1497 ® Emphasizing the importance of older adults and their leadership by publicly recognizing their continued achievements ® Presenting opportunities for older adults to share their wisdom, experience, and skills ® Recognizing older adults as a valuable asset in strengthening the Cabarrus County communities NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Cabarrus County Board of Commissioners do hereby proclaim May 2013 to be Older Americans Month. We urge Cabarrus County citizens to take time this month to recognize older adults, adults with disabilities and the people who serve and support them as vital citizens who greatly contribute to the community. Poole, Chairman Cabarrus County Board of Commissioners (C -6) BOC - Guardian Ad Litem Child Advocate Month Proclamation Chairman Poole read the proclamation proclaiming May 2013 as Guardian Ad Litem Child Advocate Month aloud. UPON MOTION of Commissioner Burrage, seconded by Commissioner Measmer and unanimously carried, the Board adopted the following proclamation: Proclamation No. 2013 -05 Proclamation Guardian Ad Litem Child Advocate Month April 2013 WHEREAS, the North Carolina Guardian ad Litem Program, celebrating 30 years of child advocacy, has established a distinguished record of public service through its work to enhance the quality of life for abused and neglected children, and WHEREAS, Cabarrus County has a Guardian ad Litem program; and WHEREAS, Guardian ad Litem volunteers come from a variety of professional, educational and ethnic backgrounds, acting as advocates for abused and neglected children in the - complicated and often unfamiliar court and child welfare systems; and WHEREAS, the court appoints Guardian ad Litem advocates to serve as officers of the court, helping to improve the quality of information presented, by acting as the court's eyes and ears in the child's life; and WHEREAS, April has been proclaimed Child Abuse Prevention Month, an observance that reflects the purpose of the Guardian ad Litem program, to protect and defend children from harm and ensure that abused and neglected children are provided with the court - ordered services they need; and WHEREAS, April is recognized annually in the United States as a time to honor the contributions Guardian ad Litem child advocates that have donated more than 491,000 hours of service to children in North Carolina in 2012; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Cabarrus County Board of Commissioners do hereby proclaim April 2013 to be Guardian Ad Litem Child Advocate Month. We urge Cabarrus County citizens to seek enhanced quality of life and safety for abused and neglected children in our community, to reflect on the service volunteered by child advocates and thank those who are already volunteering their time and effort.
