February 6, 2012 (Work Session) <br />4 <br />� l 1•i <br />- LI` <br />r.� s �' <br />1 � <br />- I I � I • <br />E951 -a <br />•I unch - 3 @U ic: t <br />c a - <br />I <br />c <br />C <br />e' <br />In response to questions from Chairman Poole on the amount of time <br />needed to finalize the expansion details, Mr. Grant anticipated the <br />Greenway's proposal would be forthcoming. However, Kyle Bilafer, General <br />Services Director, advised NCDENR will require additional testing whether the <br />County expands the facility or gets Greenway Solutions to do it. He <br />requested direction from the Board on how to proceed. <br />Mike Downs, County Manager, explained that staff recommended the <br />landfill be closed in 2013. However, based on new information, it may be <br />feasible to continue to operate by expanding and thereby extend the life of <br />the facility for 10 to 20 years. Either scenario will require additional <br />engineering costs. <br />County staff responded to a number of questions from the Board about <br />environmental issues and why a previous arrangement with Greenway Solutions <br />fell through. <br />Mr. Downs stated Greenway's proposal and anticipated costs to the <br />County would be evaluated and presented in March. <br />Chairman Poole expressed support for continuation of the exploratory <br />effort and to receive an update in March. <br />Parks - Reg{aest to Change Current Parks Holiday Schedule <br />Londa Strong, Parks Director, reported County parks are open year -round <br />except for: Thanksgiving Day and the day after, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day <br />and New Year's Day. She said the Department received several calls, e -mails <br />and Facebook posts regarding holiday closings, especially the day after <br />Thanksgiving which was unseasonably warm. She said Park staff reviewed the <br />current schedule and made a presentation to the Parks Commission.
