Poole Chairman, Board of Commissioner April 16, 2012 <br />Name Title Date <br />A brief discussion ensued. <br />(C -7) United Family Services - Proclamation Declaring April 2012 as Sexual <br />Assault Awareness Month in Cabarrus County <br />Becky Wilson, Cabarrus Region Director, United Family Services (UFS) , <br />presented statistical data on sexual violence in the United States and stated <br />UFS provides support for victims and family members. She announced UFS, <br />along with Cabarrus Partnership for Children, Cabarrus County Department of <br />Social Services, Cabarrus County Guardian Ad Litem, and Cabarrus County Child <br />Protection Services are sponsoring a walk to raise awareness on Saturday, <br />April 21 morning at 8:00 a.m. at the corner of Union Street and Corban <br />Avenue. <br />UPON MOTION of Vice Chairman Burrage, seconded by Commissioner Measmer <br />and unanimously carried, the Board adopted the following proclamation: <br />Proclamation No. 2012 -07 <br />SEXUAL ASSAULT AWARENESS MONTH <br />PROCLAMATION <br />WHEREAS, Sexual Assault Awareness Month is intended to draw attention to the <br />fact that sexual violence is widespread and has public health implications <br />for every community member of Cabarrus County; and <br />WHEREAS, rape, sexual assault, and sexual harassment impact our community as <br />seen by statistics indicating that one in four girls and one in six boys will <br />have experienced sexual abuse by the time they are 18; and <br />WHEREAS, we must work together to educate our community about what can be <br />done to prevent sexual assault and how to support survivors; and <br />WHEREAS, staff and volunteers of anti - violence programs at United Family <br />Services encourage every person to speak out when witnessing acts of violence <br />however small; and <br />WHEREAS, with leadership, dedication, and encouragement, there is compelling <br />evidence that we can be successful in reducing sexual violence in Cabarrus <br />County through prevention education, increased awareness, and holding <br />perpetrators who commit acts of violence responsible for their actions; and <br />WHEREAS, Cabarrus County strongly supports the efforts of national, state, <br />and local partners, and of every citizen to actively engage in public and <br />private efforts, including conversations about what sexual violence is, how <br />to prevent it, how to help survivors connect with services, and how every <br />segment of our society can work together to better address sexual violence. <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Cabarrus County Board of <br />Commissioners does hereby proclaim the month of April as <br />SEXUAL ASSAULT AWARENESS MONTH IN CABARRUS COUNTY <br />
