<br />Discussion Items for Action at June 18, 2012 Meeting
<br />Human Services — Presentation of 2011 Annual Report from the Task Force for
<br />Prevention of Abuse of Elderly and Disabled Adults and Adoption of
<br />Proclamation Declaring June 15, as World Elder Abuse Day
<br />Laurie Abounader, Centralina Council of Governments Regional Ombudsman,
<br />presented the 2011 Annual Report from the newly formed Task Force for
<br />Prevention of Abuse of Elderly and Disabled Adults. She also recognized Task
<br />Force members Kathy Mowrer, Alta McKelvin and Dawn Lillard in attendance.
<br />The report included the following information:
<br />® Mission and Vision of the Task Force
<br />® Case Review
<br />® Accomplishments (Fall 2010 through 2011)
<br />® Requests of the County commissioners
<br />® Membership List
<br />Ms. Abounader requested adoption of a proclamation proclaiming June 15,
<br />2012 as World Elder Abuse Day and requested citizens wear a purple ribbon or
<br />purple clothing on June 15th in recognition and support of World Elder Abuse
<br />Day.
<br />UPON MOTION of Commissioner Measmer, seconded by Vice Chairman Burrage
<br />and unanimously carried, the Board suspended its rules of procedures in order
<br />to take action on this item due to time constraints.
<br />UPON MOTION of Commissioner Measmer, seconded by Vice Chairman Burrage
<br />and unanimously carried, the Board adopted the following proclamation:
<br />Proclamation No. 2012 -09
<br />WORLD ELDER ABUSE AWARENESS DAY
<br />PROCLAMATION
<br />WHEREAS, Cabarrus County seniors deserve to live safely with dignity,
<br />and as independently as possible, with the supports they need; and
<br />WHEREAS, elder abuse is most often defined as any act that harms a
<br />senior or jeopardizes his or her health or welfare; and
<br />WHEREAS, eliminating abuse to older persons is each community's
<br />responsibility; and
<br />WHEREAS, Cabarrus- County is concerned about the risk to our older
<br />residents who suffer from neglect or are victims of financial, emotional or
<br />physical abuse; and
<br />WHEREAS, all of our residents should watch for signs of abuse such as
<br />physical trauma, withdrawal, depression, anxiety, fear of family members,
<br />friends or caregivers.
<br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Board of Commissioners for
<br />Cabarrus County, North Carolina, do hereby proclaim June 15, 2012 as
<br />"ELDER ABUSE AWARENESS DAY"
<br />in Cabarrus County and encourage everyone to commit to build safer
<br />communities for our elderly residents.
