December 17, 2012 (Regular Meeting) Page 1343 <br />UPON MOTION of Vice Chairman White, seconded by Commissioner Morris and <br />unanimously carried, the board adopted the following proclamation: <br />Proclamation No. 2012 -16 <br />PROCLAMATION <br />WHEREAS, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., was born on January 15, 1929 in <br />Atlanta, Georgia, and devoted his life to fighting poverty, injustice and <br />racism in America; and <br />WHEREAS, Dr. King, through his practice of non- violent protest, <br />promoted the importance of love, peace and freedom for humankind and <br />challenged America to honor its promise of liberty and justice for all <br />citizens; and <br />WHEREAS, during his lifetime, Dr. King sought to forge the common <br />ground on which individuals of all ages, races and backgrounds could join <br />together to address important community issues and provide service to their <br />community; and <br />WHEREAS, the third Monday in January has been established as a national <br />holiday to observe the anniversary of Dr. King's birth. <br />NOW THEREFORE, the Cabarrus County Board of Commissioners hereby <br />proclaims Monday, January 21, 2013 as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day in <br />Cabarrus County and encourages all citizens to join in the special programs <br />and ceremonies to be held on January 19 -21 honoring the life and work of Dr. <br />King and his legacy of peace and equality for all citizens. <br />Adopted this the 17 day of December, 2012. <br />/s/ Elizabeth F. Poole, Chairman <br />Cabarrus County Board of Commissioners <br />Attest: <br />/s/ Megan Smit <br />Megan Smit, Clerk to the Board <br />(C -2) BOC - Proclamation Commemorating Veterans Day <br />Chairman Poole read the Proclamation Commemorating Veterans Day aloud. <br />UPON MOTION of Commissioner Burrage, seconded by Commissioner Measmer <br />and unanimously carried, the board adopted the following proclamation: <br />Proclamation No. 2012 -17 <br />Proclamation <br />Commemorating Veterans Day <br />WHEREAS, America was founded on the principles of liberty, opportunity and <br />justice for all; and <br />WHEREAS, America has called on her men and women in uniform to protect our <br />national security, to preserve our rights and freedoms and to keep our <br />democracy safe; and <br />WHEREAS, through their steadfast defense of America's ideals, our service <br />members have ensured our country still stands strong, our founding principles <br />still shine, and nations around the world know the blessings of freedom; and <br />WHEREAS, on Veterans Day November 11, 2012, we recognized the men and women <br />of our Armed Forces who valiantly defended these values throughout our <br />Nation's History; and <br />WHEREAS, we also remember and pay tribute to the American armed forces whose <br />courage and sacrifice secures our freedom and keeps the peace and defends our <br />values around the world; and <br />NOW, THEREFORE, the Cabarrus County Board of Commissioners do hereby proclaim <br />November 11, 2012 as National Veteran's Day and call upon our citizens to <br />always remember and honor our veterans, and those who continue to serve this <br />
