(G -10) Library - Proclamation Declaring March and April, 2011 as "One Book One Community" Month and Saturday, April 9th as Tim O'Brien Day in Cabarrus County Dana Eure, Library Director, reviewed a number of ongoing events associated with the "One Book One Community" program featuring The Things They Carried, by Tim O'Brien. She advised the purpose of the program is to get the community to read and discuss one book, collectively. Following discussion, Vice Chairman Poole MOVED to approve the following proclamation with Commissioner Burrage providing the second. The motion unanimously carried. Proclamation No. 2011 -01 NORTH CAROLINA CABARRUS COUNTY PROCLAMATION WHEREAS, reading is a joy for all ages which allows young and old to come together in discussion on a variety of topics. WHEREAS, every community has special traits that makes it unique. These traits develop over time and are woven into the fabric of its citizens' daily lives. In many ways, our community defines who we are. WHEREAS, every community comes together through shared history, shared knowledge, and shared experiences. As our community grows and changes, it can become more difficult to maintain and to honor the traits that are unique and special. WHEREAS, One Book One Community is one way to bring together each diverse individual in Cabarrus County to share an experience together - the experience of reading the same novel. This collective experience not only encourages literacy; it also encourages dialogue and the expression of thoughts and ideas among individuals who may not otherwise find a connection. WHEREAS, the Cabarrus County Public Library selected the months of March and April, 2011 as the One Book One Community - Cabarrus Reads event. WHEREAS, the Cabarrus County Public Library has selected The Things They Carried by Tim O'Brien for this year's One Book One Community - Cabarrus Reads event. WHEREAS, the Cabarrus County Public Library in celebration of the One Book One Community event created several ways to come together and participate throughout March and April by meeting the author, Tim O'Brien, participating in book discussions, and many other events. NOW, THEREFORE, the Cabarrus County Board of Commissioners County declare the months of March and April, 2011 as One Book One Community Months and Saturday, April 9th as Tim O'Brien day in Cabarrus County and commend its observance to all citizens.
