March 24, 2008 (Regular Meeting) Page 752 <br />community volunteers to advocate in court for abused and neglected children <br />who are in the custody of the Department of Social Services. Cabarrus County <br />currently has 121 children in foster care. These children are represented by <br />52 Volunteer Guardians ad Litem. The Proclamation will raise the level of <br />awareness of abused and neglected children in our community and give tribute <br />to the individuals who regularly advocate for their best interest. <br />UPON MOTION of Commissioner Privette, seconded by Vice Chairman Juba <br />and unanimously carried, the Board adopted the following proclamation: <br />Proclamation No. 2008-02 <br />GUARDIAN AD LITEM CHILD ADVOCATE DAY 2008 <br />BY THE CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD OF THE <br />CABARRUS COUNTY COMMISSIONERS <br />A PROCLAMATION <br />WHEREAS, the Cabarrus County District 19A Guardian ad Litem program has <br />established a distinguished record of public service through its work to <br />enhance the quality of life for children in foster care; and <br />WHEREAS, Guardian ad Litem Volunteers come from a variety of <br />professional, educational and ethnic backgrounds, acting as advocates for <br />abused and neglected children in the complicated and often unfamiliar court <br />and child welfare systems; and <br />WHEREAS, the Cabarrus County District Court appoints Guardian ad Litem <br />advocates to serve as officers of the court, helping to improve the quality <br />of information presented to the court by acting as the court's eyes and ears <br />in the child's life; and <br />WHEREAS, April 2008 has been proclaimed Child Abuse Prevention Month in <br />the State of North Carolina, an observance that reflects the purpose of <br />Guardian ad Litem programs, which is to protect and defend children from harm <br />and ensure that abused and neglected children are provided with the court- <br />ordered services they need; <br />NOW, THEREFORE, I, H. Jay White, Sr., Chairman, Cabarrus County Board <br />of Commissioners do hereby proclaim April 15, 2008, as <br />"GUARDIAN AD LITEM CHILD ADVOCATE DAY" <br />in Cabarrus County, North Carolina, and urge all Cabarrus County residents to <br />join in this observance. <br />/s/ H. RESOLUTION AMENDING THE <br />CABARRUS COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS' <br />- MEETING SCHEDULE <br />FOR CALENDAR YEAR 2008 <br />WHEREAS, the Cabarrus County Board of Commissioners adopted its 2006 <br />Meeting Schedule in December 2007; and <br />
