<br />March 20, 2006 - Regular Meeting <br /> <br />Page <br /> <br />530 <br /> <br />Chairman Carruth recognized Alyssa Holden who was recently named as one <br />of the State's top two Youth Volunteers for 2006 by the Prudential Spirit of <br />Community Awards Program. Miss Holden organized a school fundraiser for the <br />American Red Cross Hurricane Katrina Relief Fund. Over $16,000.00 was <br />collected to benefit persons affected by the hurricane. <br /> <br />On behalf of the Board, Commissioner Freeman presented the following <br />proclamation to Miss Holden. <br /> <br />PROCLAMATION <br /> <br />WHEREAS I citizen volunteers are one of the most valuable resources of <br />counties throughout the United States, with volunteers of all ages <br />contributing greatly to their local communities; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards is <br />program conducted by Prudential Financial in partnership with <br />Association of Secondary School Principals to honor young <br />outstanding acts of volunteerismj and <br /> <br />a nationwide <br />the National <br />people for <br /> <br />WHEREAS, thousands of youth from across the country were considered for <br />recognition in this year's awards program; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, Alyssa Holden, a fifth grade student at Cox Mill Elementary <br />School, has been named as one of North Carolina I s top two youth volunteers <br />for 2006, in the 11th annual Prudential Spirit of Community Awards; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, Alyssa earned this prestigious honor by organizing a school <br />fund-raiser for the American Red Cross Hurricane Katrina Relief Fund and <br />collecting more than $16,000 to assist those persons affected by the <br />hurricane; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, Alyssa exemplifies the value of volunteer community service <br />and is a role model to other youth as well as the adults in our county. <br /> <br />NOW, THEREFORE, the Cabarrus County Board of Commissioners hereby <br />commends Alyssa Holden, our Prudential Spirit of Community Award honoree, for <br />her outstanding volunteer contribution to others and our county; and in honor <br />of this achievement, proclaims March 20, 2006, as the Alyssa <br />Holden/Prudential Spirit of Community Recognition Day in Cabarrus County. <br /> <br />This the 20th day of March, 2006. <br />/s/ Robert W. Carruth, Chairman <br />Cabarrus County Board of Commissioners <br /> <br />Miss Holden stated she organized the fundraiser at Cox Mill Elementary <br />School after seeing the widespread devastation in Louisiana and Mississippi. <br />She reported that Lowe's Home Improvement matched the funds raised at the <br />school for contribution to the American Red Cross. <br /> <br />(C-2) <br />State <br /> <br />Recognition of the Cannon School Basketball and Swim Teams on Winning <br />Championships <br /> <br />Commissioner Freeman recognized the Cannon School Cougars Varsity Boys <br />Basketball Team and Varsity Girls Swim Team for winning two NCISAA State 2A <br />Titles for varsity basketball and swimming. On behalf of the Board, <br />Commissioner Freeman presented the following Resolution to team members, <br />Basketball Coach Ron Johnson and Swim Team Coach Denise Weatherford. <br /> <br />Resolution No. 2006-04 <br /> <br />RESOLUTION <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the Cannon School Cougars earned two NCISAA State Titles for varsity <br />basketball and swimming, and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the Cannon School Varsity Boys Basketball Team, <br />captured the NCISAA State 2A Title, defeating number one <br />Christian by a score of 62-60, and <br /> <br />the "Cougars," <br />seed Victory <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the championship victory by the Cougars was the culmination of a <br />highly successful basketball season, setting a school record by winning 16 <br />games in a row and securing an overall record of 28-3; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the Varsity Boys Basketball Team won the <br />Conference regular season and tournament championship <br />perfect 17-0 record in conference play, and <br /> <br />Metrolina <br />finishing <br /> <br />Atlantic <br />with a <br />
