<br />November 21, 2005 (Regular Meeting) <br /> <br />Page <br /> <br />397 <br /> <br />WHEREAS, Kannapolis was founded according to the vision of cotton <br />merchant and textile manufacturer James william Cannon in 1906 and built by <br />the continuing vision of the Cannon family and the people of Kannapolis on <br />lands purchased by James W. Cannon in northern Cabarrus and southern Rowan <br />Counties; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, 100 years later, David Murdock's vision for the North Carolina <br />Research Campus has renewed the people of Kannapolis' vision for the city, <br />which incorporated in 1984, and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, James W. Cannon built great towel manufacturing plants and <br />erected around those mills a "model mill town," a community with decent <br />housing for his employees, with good schools, numerous churches, adequate <br />recreational facilities, a business district, and good jobs; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, skilled <br />states to work in the <br />markets of the world, <br />value; and <br /> <br />textile workers moved to Kannapolis from many other <br />Cannon plants and produce textile products for the <br />making the Cannon name synonymous wi th quali ty and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the North Carolina Research Campus, built upon the same land <br />as Cannon Mills, and the city's efforts to attract additional industry will <br />attract workers from many places, support housing, employment, education and <br />an improved quality of life in Kannapolis; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, during the great depression of the 1930s, Charles A. Cannon <br />kept the doors of his plants open to provide work for his employees even <br />though few new orders were being received and he was instrumental in <br />persuading New York bankers to renew the short-term obligations of the State <br />of North Carolina, thus preventing a disastrous default by the State; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, Charles A. Cannon created one new job for each day during the <br />half-century he provided leadership for the Cannon mills and vigorously <br />resisted all legislation which adversely affected the textile industry, and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the North Carolina Research Campus, in partnership with Dole <br />Foods and the University of North Carolina, will create jobs for skilled <br />workers and contribute through research to the local, regional, state and <br />global economy, and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, J.W. Cannon, Charles A. Cannon, who assumed leadership of the <br />mill after the death of his father in 1921, and the Cannon family, expanded <br />the mill, erected churches, built Cannon Memorial Hospital, now Northeast <br />Medical Center, started musical education in the schools, worked to preserve <br />and promote the arts, history and cultural affairs, and renovated the <br />buildings of downtown Kannapolis in a Colonial Williamsburg style, and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the North Carolina Research Campus will stimulate advanced <br />education, culture and revitalize many areas of Kannapolis; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the people of Kannapolis are widely-known for their strong <br />work ethic, civic pride, competitive sports teams, contributions to the birth <br />and development of stockcar racing and the motorsports industry, bands and <br />musical groups, community and patriotic spirit, faith, their service in every <br />armed conflict during the city's history, and their bravery in serving their <br />country with valor and distinction; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, to this day and forward into the next 100 years, the people of <br />Kannapolis will retain the characteristics of an independent and indomitable <br />spirit, loyalty, pride of workmanship, patriotism, and a love for their <br />families, churches, and community; and take pride in their accomplishments as <br />a thriving city, their history and heritage as they live with their faces <br />resolutely towards the future; <br /> <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Cabarrus County <br />Commissioners that 2006 will be the year of Kannapolis' <br />Celebration, Celebrating Kannapolis: People, Pride and Progress. <br /> <br />Board of <br />Centennial <br /> <br />Adopted this 21't day of November, 2005. <br /> <br />/s/ Carolyn B.
