March 18, 2002 Page 300 <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the Red cross also provides assistance during international <br />emergencies, including such activities as administering America's Fund for <br />Afghan Children, rushing immediate medical aid and other needed items to <br />countries devastated by natural disasters and helping millions of people <br />around the world to battle malnutrition and life-threatening diseases and <br />gain access to safe drinking water; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, other Red cross services include recruiting millions of people <br />annually to donate blood and thereby providing hospitals with half of the <br />Nation's supply of blood and blood prOducts, working with the troops who are <br />fighting terrorism in Afghanistan, and helping to keep service members and <br />their families in touch with each other; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, at home, the Red Cross's courses in lifesaving skills, first <br />aid, CPR and water safety provide our citizens with information they need to <br />help maintain safe and healthy lives; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, over one million Red Cross volunteers help make our country <br />stronger and more compassionate by relieving suffering and saving lives every <br />year. <br /> <br /> NOW, THEREFORE, the Cabarrus County Board 'of Commissioners hereby <br />proclaims March 2002 as American Red Cross Month in Cabarrus County and urges <br />all citizens to support, this organization's noble humanitarian mission. <br /> <br />Adopted this the 18th day of March 2002. <br />/s/ Robert M. Freeman, Chairman <br />Cabarrus County Board of Commissioners <br /> <br />Proclamation - County Government Week (April 7 - 13, 2002) <br /> <br /> Chairman Freeman recognized Commissioner Suggs to read the County <br />Government Week Proclamation. <br /> <br /> UPON MOTION of Commissioner Privette, seconded by Commissioner Suggs <br />and unanimously carried, the Board adopted the following Proclamation. <br /> <br />Resolution No. 2002-04 <br /> <br />NATIONAL COUNTY GOVERNMENT WEEK <br />April 7 - 13, 2002 <br /> PROCLAMATION <br /> <br />Counties secure America. The terror attacks on September 11, 2001 <br />spotlighted the work County officials do 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 <br />days a year. <br /> <br />Counties are the first to respond to emergency situations and are primarily <br />responsible for planning for disasters. <br /> <br />County officials keep citizens protected and communities thriving. Due to <br />the planning, cooperation and dedication of counties across America, <br />emergency response professionals from all across the nation are able to <br />mobilize and respond quickly and effectively. <br /> <br />Counties continue to deal with the after effects of September 11 and the <br />ensuing public health threats. <br /> <br />There are 3,066 counties in the United States, collectively responsible for <br />the well being of more than 230 million residents. <br /> <br />Counties have a long history of serving and providing for the American <br />people. In this new and trying time, counties will continue to safeguard our <br />way of llfe, remaining vigilant protectors of our citizens. <br /> <br />County governments are the citizen's local government voice, providing <br />solutions that bring communities together. <br /> <br />In recognition of the leadership, innovation and valuable service provided by <br />our nations' counties: <br /> <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED the Board of County Commissioners of Cabarrus <br />County, North Carolina, hereby proclaims April 7 - 13, 2002 as <br /> <br /> <br />
