Lieutenant Brad Riley recognized Sheriff Robert Canaday who will retire <br />on January 31, 2001 after 31~ years with the Cabarrus County Sheriff's <br />Deparment. Sheriff Canaday began work with the Sheriff's Department on July <br />21, 1969. He was first elected Sheriff in 1982 and re-elected in 1986, 1990, <br />1994 and 1998. <br /> <br /> On behalf of the Board, Vice Chairman Carruth presented a plaque to <br />Sheriff Canaday in appreciation for his dedicated service to Cabarrus County <br />and its citizens. <br /> <br /> Sheriff Canaday commented on his tenure as Sheriff and stated it had <br />been an honor to serve the citizens of Cabarrus County. He stated his <br />support for the appointment of Lt. Brad Riley as his successor and said he <br />was absolutely qualified and dedicated to serving the citizens of Cabarrus <br />County. Further, Sheriff Canaday expressed appreciation to the men and women <br />who work for the Sheriff's Department. <br /> <br /> Board members expressed appreciation to Sheriff Canaday for his <br />dedicated service to Cabarrus County. Commissioner Privette commended Sheriff <br />Canaday on his leadership and stated he had served with distinction and <br />honor. Chairman Fennel stated it had been his privilege to work with Sheriff <br />Canaday and described him as a "great" man with such characteristics as <br />honesty, integrity and trustworthiness. <br /> <br />Reco~nition of Kelly Sifford and Rod~er Lentz for Obtaining their American <br />Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) Membership - Jonathan Marshall, <br />Plannin~ Services Director <br /> <br /> Mr. Jonathan Marshall, Planning Services Director, paid tribute to <br />Sheriff Canaday. He commented on how Sheriff Canaday had stood up for all <br />County employees throughout the years. <br /> <br /> Mr. Marshall recognized Ms. Kelly Sifford and Mr. Rodger Lentz, <br />Cabarrus County Senior Planners, for achieving membership in the American <br />Institute of Certified Planners (AICP). The AICP membership requires certain <br />levels of education, training and experience along with strict adherence to a <br />Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct. <br /> <br /> vice Chairman Carruth presented the Certificates of Membership to Ms. <br />Sifford and Mr. Lentz. Board members congratulated them on their <br />achievement. <br /> <br />Reco~nition of the Cabarrus County Fair - Debbie Bost, County Extension <br />Director <br /> <br /> Ms. Debbie Bost, County Extension Director, recognized recent successes <br />of the 2000 Cabarrus County Agricultural Fair. At the North Carolina <br />Association of Agricultural Fairs Annual Convention, the Fair received the <br />following state awards in the largest category division: 1st place Youth <br />Award; 2ad Place overall Agricultural Fair; and the North Carolina Department <br />of Agricultural Goodness Grows in North Carolina Award. Ms. Bost recognized <br />the following Fair officials who were present for the meeting: Mr. Harold <br />McEachern, General Manager; Ms. Mary Ann Hammill, Operations Manager; Mr. <br />Estus White, Fair Board President; and Mr. Marvin Bost, Fair Board member. <br /> <br /> Mr. McEachern expressed appreciation to Ms. Bost and the Cooperative <br />Extension staff for their work on behalf of the Fair. He also thanked the <br />many young people for their hard work each year to make the Fair a success. <br /> <br />NEW BUSINESS <br /> <br />Appointment of Lieutenant David B. "Brad" Riley as Cabarrus County Sheriff <br />upon the Retirement of Sheriff Robert M. Canaday on Januar~ 31, 2001 <br /> <br /> A letter was included in the Agenda from Mr. John W. Clark, II, <br />Chairman of the Cabarrus Democratic Executive Committee, recommending the <br />appointment of Lt. David B. "Brad" Riley as Cabarrus County Sheriff upon <br />Sheriff Canaday's retirement on January 31, 2001. <br /> <br /> Lieutenant Brad Riley introduced himself, stating he comes into the <br />position of Sheriff with great honor and looks forward to working with the <br />Board. <br /> <br /> Sheriff Canaday again made remarks in support of Lt. Riley and his <br />appointment to the position of Sheriff. He stated Lt. Riley is an excellent <br />man who will do a good job as Sheriff of Cabarrus County. <br /> <br /> <br />
