514 <br /> <br />appraised at $494,000.00, Mr. Davis challenged~Cabarrus County and its citizens <br />to take appropriate steps to develop the park so that Mr. and Mrs. Brown can see <br />their gift come to fruition. <br /> <br /> Mr. Steve Little, Recreation Director, expressed appreciation for the <br />generous gift by Mr. and Mrs. Brown. He stated the proposal for the park and the <br />gift of the land was developed over several months through a "team effort" by a <br />number of individuals, including Mr. Davis, Ms. Beatty, Mr. Hunter, and Mr. John <br />Lentz, Principal of Central Gabarrus High School. The proposal for the <br />development of the land as a school/park site was included in the agenda for the <br />meeting. Proposed facilities include tennis courts, youth baseball/softball <br />fields, soccer fields, picnic facilities, indoor swimming and aquatic center, <br />play areas, outdoor amphitheater, hiking and nature trails, a countywide <br />community meeting center, and outside basketball courts. A trail system will <br />link this school/park to the present Central Cabarrus High School. <br /> <br />Commissioner Olio-Mills arrived for the meeting. <br /> <br /> UPON MOTION of Commissioner Fennel, seconded by Commissioner Casper and <br />unanimously carried, the Board adopted the following "Resolution of Appreciation" <br />which was read by Commissioner Fennel. <br /> <br /> RESOLUTION OF APPRECIATION TO <br />MARY LORE FLOWE BROWN AND HARRY G. BROWN <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, Mary Lore Flowe Brown and Harry G. Brown have this <br />date given to Cabarrus County and its people two tracts of land <br />adjoining and near Central Cabarrus High School to be used by <br />Cabarrus County for a public park and recreation facility; and <br /> WHEREAS, parks and recreation areas contribute greatly to the <br />quality of life, and the need to preserve suitable lands for these <br />uses is urgent; and <br /> WHEREAS, the donated lands are in an area of rapid residential <br />growth and this gift will preserve open space and recreational <br />facilities upon land that would otherwise be subject to dense <br />development; and <br /> WHEREAS, because of its location adjacent to Central Cabarrus <br />High School, it is ideally suited for development to serve the <br />recreational, sports, and educational programs of the Cabarrus <br />County Schools; and <br />WHEREAS, the families of Mary Lore Flowe Brown and Harry G. <br />Brown have resided in Cabarrus County for several generations; and <br /> WHEREAS, Mary Lore Flowe Brown and Harry G. Brown through <br />their generosity and desire to benefit future generations have seen <br />fit to provide lands ideally suited for park and recreational uses; <br />and <br /> WHEREAS, the deed of gift restricts the lands to park and <br />recreational uses; and <br /> WHEREAS, the land was owned by W. W. Flowe, the father of Mary <br />Lore Flowe Brown and a man known for his public spiritedness, and <br />the Browns have requested that the park be named in his memory; and <br /> WHEREAS, the undersigned County Commissioners of Cabarrus <br />County desire to accept the gift for the purposes expressed in the <br />deed, to express their appreciation, and to name the park; <br /> NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the undersigned County <br />Commissioners of Cabarrus County do hereby accept the conveyance of <br />lands pursuant to the deed of gift dated August 21, 1995 and for the <br />purposes therein stated; <br /> BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the undersigned County <br />Commissioners of Cabarrus County, on behalf of its citizens, do <br />hereby express their deepest appreciation to Mary Lore Flowe Brown <br />and Harry G. Brown for their generosity and their concern for their <br />fellow citizens and future generations; and <br /> BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the park to be developed on the <br />land shall be known as W. W. FLOWE PARK and that upon the <br />development thereof, there shall be erected a suitable monument or <br />plaque bearing an inscription which shall state in substance, "These <br /> <br /> <br />
