<br />Recognition of Retired Social Services Employee, Violet Hough
<br />
<br /> The Board paid special recognition to Mrs. Violet Hough who retired on May
<br />31, 1993 after having worked as the switchboard operator at the Department of
<br />Social Services for the past ten years. Mr. Gene Hough accepted the plaque of
<br />appreciation for his wife who was unable to attend the meeting.
<br />
<br />Final Report from the Bicentennial Commission - The Honorable Clarence Herren
<br />
<br /> The Honorable Clarence Horten, Chairman of the Board of the Bicentennial
<br />Commission, expressed appreciation to the Board for its support during the 1992
<br />Bicentennial Celebration in Cabarrus County. He reviewed the following goals
<br />which were established at the time of the Commission's appointment in 1989 and
<br />which he stated were accomplished during 1992: (1) Educate people on the history
<br />of Cabarrus County; (2) Recover and preserve historical material; and (3) Provide
<br />enjoyment to the community. In conclusion, Judge Herren presented a refund in
<br />the amount of $500.00 to Cabarrus County from the Bicentennial Commission.
<br />
<br /> Ms. Helen Arthur, Co-Chairman of the Bicentennial Commission, thanked the
<br />Board for its assistance with the Bicentennial celebration. She commented on the
<br />spirit of cooperation which she stated was evident at the many activities held
<br />throughout the year. Ms. Arthur recognized the municipalities and the following
<br />persons for their assistance during the year-long celebration: Steve Little, L.
<br />D. Coltrane, Gabe Stewart, Thomas Ramseur, Thomas Dayvault, H. A. Wheeler, Doris
<br />Rogers, John Day, John Witherspoon, Sue Russell, and John Dysart.
<br />
<br /> Commissioner Barnhart thanked the Bicentennial Commission on behalf of the
<br />Board of Commissioners for the successful Bicentennial Celebration. He further
<br />expressed appreciation to Mr. William G. Hamby, Jr., former County Commissioner,
<br />for his work with the Bicentennial Commission.
