420

vacate their homes during the airshow. To assist in this effort, the Committee
has asked the Board to send a letter to the residents encouraging them to give
full consideration to the Committee's request.

UPON MOTION of Commissioner Payne, seconded by Commissioner Barnhart and
unanimously carried, the Board authorized the Chairman to sign the following
letter to be sent to Speedway area residents who have been asked to leave their
homes during an airshow sponsored by the USS Charlotte Commissioning Committee.

SAMPLE LETTER

Address (to be provided)

Dear Mr./Mrs. :

The letter which you received recently from the USS Charlotte
Commissioning Committee explains the reason for their request that
you vacate your residence on the three afternoons of the proposed
airshow. I understand completely that this represents an
inconvenience. That you are considering to or perhaps have already
agreed to comply with their request represents a sacrifice on your
part for the good of our entire community.

The World 600 Children's Charity, which is sponsored by the
Charlotte Motor Speedway, benefits children's charities throughout
this region of North Carolina. While the USS Charlotte is named
after a community other than our own, we can be justifiably proud
that the United States Navy honored our region with this beautiful
and powerful namesake. This ship will help to ensure the freedom of
our country and that of our allies for the next 30 years. The USS
Charlotte Foundation has been established to provide private funds
for activities and services for the crew which do not meet the
requirements for government funding. Our servicemen need and deserve
our support.

Other benefits that our community receives every time the Charlotte
Motor Speedway conducts a major event such as this airshow are the
jobs that our citizens fill at the track and the influx of dollars
into our local businesses.

I hope that you will consider honoring the request of the USS
Charlotte Commissioning Committee. If so, I would like to express my
gratitude for your sense of patriotism and willingness to help these
worthwhile charities.
Sincerely,

Appointment - Firemen's Relief Fund Trustee for the Flowes Store Volunteer Fire

Department (1)

UPON MOTION of Commissioner Barnhart, seconded by Commissioner Payne and
unanimously carried, the Board appointed Mr. Thomas Lowder as a trustee to the
Firemen's Relief Fund for the Flowes Store Fire Department.
