While these activities may no longer be
necessary for survival--as in colonial times--they are still
relevant today.

For over 100 years, sportsmen have been in the forefront of
the conservation movement. Not content with merely vocalizing their
support, hunters and fishermen requested special fees and taxes on
their equipment which help pay for wildlife management and other
conservation programs. Over the years, monies raised totaled over
$8 billion for conservation.

These sportsmen-financed programs have led to the dramatic
comeback of many species such as white-tailed deer, elk, antelope
and wild turkey and have benefited all wildlife.

As individuals and through their organizations, hunters and
fishermen volunteer countless hours of their time for local
conservation projects and to raise funds for conservation.

I would like to take this opportunity to commend hunters and
fishermen for their efforts on behalf of wildlife and their
contributions to conservation.

Therefore, I, James W. Lentz, Chairman of the Cabarrus County
Board of Commissioners, do proclaim Saturday, September 22, 1990,
as "Hunting and Fishing Day in Cabarrus County," and call upon all
citizens to join with sportsmen-conservationists in their efforts
to ensure the wise use and proper management of our natural
resources to benefit future generations.

This the 4th day of September, 1990.

/s/ James W. Lentz

James W. Lentz
Chairman, Cabarrus County
Board of Commissioners

Commissioner Moss returned and was present for the remainder of the
meeting.

NEW BUSINESS

Mr. Michael M. Ruffin, County Manager, introduced Ms. Jo Atwater who will
be working during the next year as an intern in the County Manager's Office
under the Master of Public Administration Training Program of the University of
North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
UPON MOTION of Chairman Lentz, seconded by Commissioner Moss and
unanimously carried, the Board adopted the following contract amendment for
funding in the amount of $9,845.00 from the State of North Carolina for the
Cabarrus County Health Department.

AMENDMENT NUMBER 01 to CONSOLIDATED CONTRACT
between THE STATE and
THE CABARRUS COUNTY HEALTH DEPARTMENT
