54 <br />CULTURAL & HISTORIC RESOURCES <br />CONSERVE HISTORIC AND CULTURAL <br />RESOURCES THAT CONTRIBUTE TO THE <br />CHARACTER OF THE AREA <br />Cultural and historic assets, as vestiges of the past, help tell the story of <br />a place and its evolution.They help differentiate atown from surround- <br />ing areas and contribute to the character and authenticity. People can <br />more easily attach to a place when the story of its past resonates with <br />them. <br />Update/Consider conducting a formal survey of existing structures and properties <br />that locally, have historic value to create an inventory of such assets. <br />Raise awareness of existing historic and cultural resources through educational <br />programs and events, and public art that tells the story of the history of the area. <br />Encourage the preservation of such resources, making them focal points within the <br />development pattern through sensitive integration, employing conservation design <br />principles. Open space surrounding such assets as well as appropriate orientation <br />of new structures should respect the value of cultural resources. <br />
