Cabarrus County Public Library
from 3 to 8, which appears attainable based on demand once resources and tutors are in place. To
support 5 additional classes, plus new tutors and individual students, a variety of literacy building
resources are needed to expand the current supply and diversify materials offered, including
educational Bookpacks that combine workbooks and audio guides for individuals learning English,
English- Spanish dictionaries, and tutor and student workbooks.
This project will also utilize the Bilingual Library Assistant to implement Spanish language early
literacy and digital literacy programs; programs that are a major component of library services offered in
English. Requested as part of this project are 10 iPads to use in addition to the library's existing mobile
laptop lab to provide digital literacy workshops and technology services both offsite and at all library
locations.
• Develop Spanish - language collections based on demand, modernity, and relevancy. Promote
through book displays, mobile library services, and marketing.
The Spanish language collections have seen a mere 1,743 total items circulate in the areas of
Adult Fiction, Adult Nonfiction, and Adult Audio since January of 2010. There are no items classified as
Young Adult offered in Spanish. Currently, development efforts are limited due to funding and lack of
interest. With the increase in Spanish services, it is anticipated that collections would increase in
demand; therefore CCPL intends to present a well- developed and modern collection to appeal to library
users seeking Spanish language materials. For the initial year of development, the desired goal is for
Spanish materials to account for 1% of total library circulation (an estimated 7,000 items) across all
holding codes. The iPads mentioned would also support these services through a new mobile circulation
application allowing ILS function offsite, creating opportunities to issue library cards, check out
materials, and manage accounts during outreach events. All other marketing costs will be met by the
library's budget.
b. Why was this solution selected; why not something else?
This project is in direct correlation to Cabarrus County Public Library's five -year plan to improve
services to a growing and diverse population. These identified areas of improvement provide a solution
that will serve as a foundation to the Spanish- speaking residents of Cabarrus County in order to ensure
access to resources and information.
EZ Literacy & Lifelong LeatMh gf number 1 In
G -4 Page 225
