Satisfactory Attendance at Secondary School or In a Course of Study Leading to a Certificate of General Equivalence a. Description: This activity is emphasized for those recipients who are participating in countable work-related activities at least 20 hours a week, and have not completed high school. In today's job market, a high school diploma or GED is needed as a bare minimum to secure a job that can maintain a household. Also, in today's society it is necessary for the non-English speaking segment of the population to enhance their employability through `English As A Second Language' (ESL) programs. This is not only important for adults, but also for children in the household, as they must begin preparing at an early age for work. b. Provision: This activity will be provided by Rowan—Cabarrus Community College for GED and ESL, and Cabarrus County and Kannapolis City Schools for ESL and/or a high school diploma. c. Contribution to meeting of goals: Secondary school attendance leading to a diploma or GED has an impact on the following goals: • Employment • Meeting Federal Participation Rates • Job Retention • Prevention of Welfare Dependency 7. Work Experience a. Description: Work Experience has been useful in the past to not only provide recipients of Work First with the opportunity to gain good work habits, work skills, and development of a work ethic. It has also served as a strong incentive to secure paid employment, as the thought of spending hours working for no pay seems somewhat unpleasant, even if skills are being learned. Work Experience in Cabarrus County has generally been used as a last resort for those who have not been able to secure any kind of job. Additional work experience sites offering various types of work experience are being sought to allow participants options to gain experience in areas that might better suit their interests and encourage participation and expand skills. b.
