5. Health Support <br /> a. Description: Health Support services at Cabarrus County DHS are provided <br /> by the Family Support Specialist. Family Support Specialist assist Work First <br /> recipients in identifying and recognizing physical and mental health-related <br /> needs, cope with functioning limits, provide counseling, and securing <br /> admission to medical, drug treatment, and other health-related facilities. <br /> b. Provision: Assessment is done by the Family Support Specialist. Various <br /> health facilities and providers in the community provide services. <br /> c. Location: The assessment for health support is completed by the Family <br /> Support Specialist, and services take place at various locations. <br /> 6. Personal and Family Counseling <br /> a. Description: In our ongoing battle to deal with family violence, the Family <br /> Support Specialist are encountering recipients who are victims of domestic <br /> violence. In some cases, this has been the norm in the household for an <br /> extended period of time, and it has been determined that professional help is <br /> needed to assist in dealing with the issues surrounding the problem. There is a <br /> need to refer to professional organizations for counseling. <br /> b. Provision: Cardinal Innovations and Cabarrus Victims Assistance Network <br /> (CVAN)provide the provision of counseling services. These agencies deal <br /> with personal and family counseling. <br /> c. Location: Cardinal Innovations is located in Cabarrus County. CVAN is <br /> located in the county in a secured location and initially accessed by the <br /> recipient. The Family Support Specialist works with the recipient to assure <br /> appropriate services are accessed. <br /> 7. Counseling and Problem Solving: <br /> a. Description: This is a supportive service provided by the Family Support <br /> Specialist to assist recipients in the movement toward independence. It <br /> consists of dealing with enhancing their abilities to solve their own problems, <br /> make their own decisions, eliminate the barriers that they face, and build on <br /> their own strengths. <br /> b. Provision: This service will be provided by the Family Support Specialist. <br /> c. Location: In most instances, the service will be provided either at DHS or in <br /> the recipient's home. <br /> 8. Advocacy <br /> a. Description: There have consistently been problems with Work First families <br /> either making bad choices or allowing landlords or collectors to place them in <br /> a position of having to either vacate a residence or give up some possession. It <br /> is extremely difficult to get stabilized when this is the usual scenario that <br /> occurs whenever a recipient has to move or purchases a household item or car. <br /> It may be that timeliness of purchases is at the heart of the issue. The recipient <br /> is usually in a crisis mode and makes bad first choices.
