2. Informational Programs
a. Public notices /news stories have been run in the Independent Tribune for the
HOME program. These advertisements described the rights of protected persons
from discrimination in Fair Housing issues and contact information for complaints
in English and Spanish.
b. Pamphlets and posters pertaining to Fair Housing are posted at the Cabarrus
County Planning and Development Office, other government offices and in the
libraries located in Concord, Mount Pleasant, and Harrisburg. Pamphlets have
also been placed in the offices of the Department of Human Services.
c. Radio advertisements are run periodically on the local radio station regarding
Fair Housing regulations and who to call if you experience discrimination.
d. Local Cable Access Advertisements are run periodically on the local cable
access station, Channel 22, regarding Fair Housing regulations and who to call if
you think you have experienced discrimination.
e. Cabarrus County's Website has a permanent Fair Housing page that provides
the law itself and contact information for complaints in English and Spanish.
f. Educational Opportunities are addressed by Prosperity Unlimited which
provides Fair Housing in their homeownership educational programs. Cabarrus
County Community Development regularly provides presentations for church and
civic groups on housing programs and Fair Housing is always discussed as part of
the program. The Community Development Division provides training
opportunities to the Department of Human Services staff and other nonprofit
agencies as needed who request more information on the subject.
Results:
There has been no discernable result to these activities as Cabarrus County has had no
complaints or feedback other than people acknowledging that they were unaware of the
fair housing program and resources available if they feel they have been discriminated
against once they learn of these resources. No one claimed to have experienced anything
that they felt could have been discrimination at a previous time upon being informed of
the laws.
3. Universal Design Housing
The trend in affordable housing is toward universal design. Universal design is being
promoted with local housing nonprofits and government agencies who produce
affordable housing. Cabarrus County does not produce housing for sale, however, most
homes that undergo full housing rehabilitation receive many accessibility upgrades such
as walk in showers, grab bars, and wheelchair ramps.
4.
