According to the 2000 U.S. Census, Township 4 of Kannapolis and <br />Township 12 of Concord were the townships that contained the highest concentrations of <br />minorities in Cabarrus County. These areas correlate to Census Tracts 418 and 421. <br />Map 1, on page 11, illustrates the Minority Concentrations in Cabarrus County according <br />to the 2000 Census. The 2010 Census data for this category has not been released as of <br />the date of the creation of this document. Blacks are the largest minority in Cabarrus <br />County. Concentrations are defined as areas with greater than 15% Black population. <br />There were two townships, # 4 and #12 or Census Tracts 418 and 421 that met the <br />minority concentration standard in Cabarrus County in the 2000 Census. These <br />townships are located in the City of Kannapolis and the City of Concord, respectively. <br />The Census 2010 function that allows mapping of minority census tracts is not yet <br />available for Cabarrus County. Staff does not expect substantial changes in the locations <br />of minority concentration areas under the 2010 Census that were identified in the 2000 <br />Census. <br />Elderly Population. In the 2005 -2009 American Community Survey, there were 17,641 <br />elderly (65 years +) persons in Cabarrus County. This equates to 10.9% of the population <br />of Cabarrus County. This same survey finds 2,829 grandparents living with <br />grandchildren. Twenty one percent of those individuals were below the poverty level in <br />the 2005 -2009 American Community Survey. Fourteen percent of those households <br />showed the grandparents as the responsible party for the grandchildren. Of the 17,641 <br />elderly, 4,489 were living alone (2005 -2009 American Community Survey). In the 2000 <br />Census, there were 15,164 elderly persons in Cabarrus County (65 +). Map 4, on page 14, <br />illustrates the concentrations of elderly individuals at that time. The concentrations, <br />according to 2000 Census data, were located in the #4 and #12 Townships or Census <br />Tracts 418 and 421. These tracts are located in the Cities of Kannapolis and Concord, <br />respectively. The 2010 Census data for this category has not been released as of the date <br />of the creation of this document. <br />B. Income Data <br />Household Income. According to the 2005 -2009 American Community Survey, the <br />2009 Median Household Income in Cabarrus County was $54,274. In 2000, 54.5% of the <br />households in Cabarrus County were more than 80% of median income; conversely <br />45.5% of households in Cabarrus County in 2000 were below 80% of the median income. <br />The per capita income of Cabarrus County was $26,128 in 2009. Map 3, on page 13, <br />illustrates the income concentrations of Cabarrus County. The 2010 Census data for this <br />category has not been released as of the date of the creation of this document. <br />C. Employment Data <br />Employment and Transportation. The 2007 Economic Census indicates that retail, <br />food services, healthcare and professional services provided the most employment in <br />Cabarrus County. Major employers in the County are CMC Northeast Medical, Concord <br />Mills Mall, Cabarrus County Schools, local governments and Connextions.
