Economic impact from tourism increased in Cabarrus
County last year
KAREN CIMINO WILSON
Independent Tribune
Published: August 25, 2011
CONCORD, N.C. --
Tourism brought jobs and money to Cabarrus County in 2010, according to a study from the North Carolina Division
of Tourism, Film and Sports Development released recently.
"In 2010, an unquestionably difficult year for the economy, the economic impact from tourism in Cabarrus County
increased," said Donna Carpenter, president and chief executive officer of the Cabarrus County Convention and
Visitors Bureau.
Domestic tourism in Cabarrus County generated an economic impact of about $313 million in 2010, a 6.88 percent
change from 2009.
More than 3,680 jobs could be attributed directly to travel and tourism in Cabarrus County, home to the Charlotte
Motor Speedway and Concord Mills, both huge draws for local tourism. Travel generated about a $68.9 million payroll
in 2010.
"Tourism is a vital industry to Cabarrus County and these figures directly illustrate that importance in dollars and
cents," Carpenter said.
State and local tax revenues from travel to Cabarrus County amounted to $24.8 million, representing a $365.59 tax
savings to each household in the county, according to the Economic Impact of Travel on North Carolina Counties.
The study was prepared for the North Carolina Division of Tourism, Film and Sports Development by the U.S. Travel
Association.
"As an organization, we will leverage this momentum with our marketing plans and partnership activities in the
upcoming year," Carpenter said.
The Cabarrus County Convention and Visitors Bureau has been working to promote Cabarrus County as a visitor
destination and enhancing the complete visitor experience.
In the last two years, the organization has added to its efforts, developing new promotional materials for the county
and setting up information kiosks at Concord Mills and at Charlotte Motor Speedway, which is located in Concord,
during racing events.
Attachment number 1
1 -1 Page 553
