1

Anew integrated library system will provide traditional OPAC features like advanced searching, display
of current availability and status of materials, hold requests and lists of materials currently checked out
along with many other enhanced technologies and techniques such as:
• Federated searching that includes EBSCO and Gale databases. This would allow for easier access
to NC LIVE and other databases that the library currently subscribes to.
• RSS feeds of relevant news and other information including upcoming library and county events.
• Relevancy ranking of results for better results.
• Bookjackets in search results.
• Patrons can review and tag items in the catalog for enhanced searching.
• URL/856 field linking for increased options for finding information.
• Popular reading lists including NY Times and literary awards.
Staff efficiencies in acquisitions, readers advisory (through included reviews and subject linking), reports
(variety of outputs, scheduled and manipulatable) and email and telephone messaging (holds, overdues,
etc) will increase the time that is spent with patrons and enable them to provide better customer
service.
3. GOALS
One of the major goals of the Cabarrus County Public Library is to improve computer technology. The
main objective of that goal is to replace the automated library system.
Goal 3 of the LSTA Five Year Plan states:
Promote equal access to 21st century library services for all North Carolinians by providing contemporary
and evolving technologies to our state's libraries through programs designed to address infrastructure,
resources, and services.
In order for the Cabarrus County Public Library to provide 21St century library services we must have an
integrated library system that was designed for the 21St century. Two output targets of Goal 3 of the
LSTA Five Year Plan are the "number of libraries with new or upgraded library systems" and "number of
libraries that implement new interactive technologies." This project would contribute positively toward
those targets.
Although the State Library is working on a NC CARD initiative for an open source ILS option for public
libraries, the staff of the Cabarrus County Public Library have been working on the same telnet based
system for the last 20 years and need to make an intermediary transition to another system before
switching to a new statewide system that will have many bigger issues to deal with and many new things
to learn. The staff are quite nervous about the changes as it stands. Too large of a change could
negatively impact customer service.
4.OBJECTIVES
' By replacing "Dynix Classic" with Library.Solution the following objectives should be achieved:
• Access will be provided to many different sources and types of content through one point of
entry rather than a variety of locations on the library's website
' • Abetter OPAC interface will be offered that is more convenient, employs state-of-the-art search
technologies, has more visual appeal, is easier to use and engages users in a meaningful way.
1

Cabarrus County Public Library LSTA Technology Grant Application 2010-2011 3
F-2
Attachment number 1
Page 64
