The major components of the campus include the Dole-NC State Institute for
Advanced Fruit and Vegetable Science; the UNC Center for Excellence in
Nutrition; a science boarding school for girls directed by UNC Charlotte; a
stateā¢of-the-art Dole Analytical Laboratory; a fermentation facility; and an
incubator for start-up firms. Laboratory Corporation of America (LabCorp) will
also establish a major presence within the development. Duke University will
also locate its Institute for Translational Medicine to the NC Research Campus.
Reed Gold Mine
Reed Gotd Mine is the site of the first documented gold find in the United
States.
Portions of the underground tunnels at the Reed mine have been restored for
guided tours. A visitor center contains exhibits of gold and historical mining
equipment. An orientation film highlights the first gold discovery, and tours of
a restored ore-crushing stamp mill are offered. A picnic area is available, and
trails wind through the historic mining area.
9621 Reed Mine Road
Midland, NC 28107
Phone: (704) 721-GOLD (4653)
Rocky River
Rocky River starts in Iredell County near Mooresville, North Carolina, flows
south into Cabarrus County, then continues southeastward to form the tine
between Stanly County, North Carolina; Union County, North Carolina; and
Anson County, North Carolina. This river is known for its whitewater rafting and
scenic beauty and has great opportunities for trails and access points.
Environmental Benefits
Establishment of greenways and trails can restore natural corridors within
already densely populated regions and preserve them in areas soon to be
developed. This is particularly important, in rapidly growing areas like the
Charlotte region which ranked No. 7 in population increase among the list of
the nation's metro areas (US Census Bureau). Such substantial growth can be
positive from an economic standpoint, but it places a very serious strain on the
area's natural resources such as water and air quality, open space and wildlife
habitats. Greenways and trails provide corridors of natural areas within
developed land, resulting in significant positive effects on the environmental
health of the region. Some of these positive effects are outlined below. But,
along with these benefits, The Thread will raise awareness of our special
natural resources and help connect us back to nature.
G-~
