PART II. PROPOSED PROJECT NARRATIVE
The project narrative must address the following questions using this form and should not
exceed six single-spaced sages, including written questions and excluding item 6 below.
1. Proposal summary: Summarize the outcomes your project will work to achieve, the
proposed location(s)/setting(s), and population(s) that will be impacted (250 words or less}.
This project will have three focuses: 4o establish a wellness council in Cabarrus County, to increase
the physical activity of youth, and to increase awareness and use of established walking trails and
greenways in the community. The wellness council will work to insure the goals of the Liveable
Community Blueprint, a countywide master plan for recreation facilities and pedestrian bike trails,
are continued. They will also help guide the decision making of the local governments, organizations,
and agencies to improve the opportunities for an active lifestyle in the community. Youth activity will
be addressed though Cabarrus County and City of Concord day camp programs. These programs will
add organized physical activity to their weekly schedules. Guest presenters and instructors will also
be used to help educate the participants about the value of active living. Resting and active heart
rates, timed walks and flexibility will be assessed pre and post program to determine the benefits to
participants. After the initial year additional organizations will be contacted and encouraged to add
organized physical activities to their youth programs. A directory of active living sites will be
developed and distributed to the public to increase awareness of active living opportunities in the
county. Signage and trail markers will be installed on several walking trails or greenways in the area.
This segment of the project will be measured through periodic user counts and surveys.
2. Target behavior(s): Will your project address physical activity, healthy eating, or both
.behaviors? Explain why. (Note: You are not required to address both physical activity and
healthy eating strategies, but if you do, the proposal must describe a well integrated
approach -see item 5. Your decision should be based on factors such as need, capacity of
fhe partnership, other sources of funding, and complementary initiatives that are planned or
currently undenaay.)
This project will address physical activity with youth as the primary target population. The number
of statistics showing today's youth are less active and more overweight than past generations is
staggering. Studies also show that active youth are more likely to remain active as adults. The
targeted day camp programs serve 400-500 participants each summer. Each program is based in a
park or recreation center which make inclusion of organized physical activity a natural.
The wellness council will be charged with helping to guide the decisions of local governments and
parks and recreation deparhnents to continue to improve and increase the opportunities for active
living in the community. The active living guide and signage on walking trails and greenways will
help educate the public to the opportunities available and the benefits of active living.
3. Target setting(s): What specific location(s) /setting(s) in the community is your project
targeted to impact (e.g., community/neighborhood, schools, and/or workplaces}? Please
explain the need /rationale for your chosen settings}. Include data or information obtained
from local assessments, such as relevant physical, demographic and social characteristics.
(Note: Decisions regarding the most appropriate location(s) I setting(s) should be based on
factors such as need, capacity of the partnership to work in the setting(s), other sources of
funding, and complementary initiatives that are planned or currently underway.)
Physical projects will target six existing walking trails and greenways in Cabarrus County.
Many users have requested markers indicating distance so they can better track their walking.
Additional signage around trail heads will draw more attention to the walkways as well as better
inform the users of the trails and their benefits. The six areas chosen to receive signs and
distance markers are in various parts of the county so they are convenient to a larger and more
diverse population.
