FACILITY STRENGTHS
Facility staff generally work hard to provide needed care and services as best they can. Cabarrus
County has enjoyed stability among the administrative staff of many facilities. For the most part,
facility administrators are knowledgeable and caring, and are responsive and cooperative with the
Community Advisory Committees.
FACILITY CHALLENGES
Based on facility visits by Committee members, the most significant issues facing facilities in
Cabarrus County include:
• Combining populations of residents who have mental illness with frail, elderly residents
presents problems for many facilities as the needs of these two diverse groups varies so
greatly.
• Facility staff often are not adequately trained to meet the unique needs of residents who have
dementia and/or mental illness.
• There are not enough beds dedicated to memory care (Alzheimer's/Dementia, special care,
secure unit) for individuals on limited incomes.
• Residents are remaining at the adult care home level of care although their needs have
increased to nursing home level of care. As a result, their needs cannot be adequately met
and their care may be compromised.
• Facilities need more visitors, volunteers, and community resources.
COMMITTEE CHALLENGES
• The primary challenge facing both CACs is not having enough members. These
vacancies increase the workload on active members and contribute to burnout and
dissatisfaction. Facilities in Cabarrus County do not get visited as often as required as a
result.
• As a result of two new Regional Ombudsman funded by the General Assembly, Region F
now has 5.75 FTE Ombudsman serving the nine counties that comprise this region. In the
most general sense, Cabarrus County will benefit from having increased service from the
Ombudsman Program. However, as a result of this growth, the CACs have been faced with
significant turnover among Regional Ombudsman over the past year, which has been
challenging.
• Limited public awareness of the Community Advisory Committees and the role the CACs
play in ensuring quality of life to residents.
~-~
