THE
MIRA! E
LEAGUE

Miracle League of Concord Proposal:

Frank Liske Park, Concord, NC

For the past five years, the Miracle League has made it possible for children across the
country with physical and mental disabilities to achieve the same dream as their healthy
peers -- to play baseball. These children get a reprieve from their daily challenges as
soon as they step or roll out onto the ball field. With donations from sponsors and the
commitment of volunteers, this total cornmunity effort brings joy to these amazing and
deserving children that would not be possible otherwise.

Now, this non-profit organization is proposing a plan to build here in Concord at Frank
Liske Park with the support of the Caharrus County and Concord City Parks and
Recreation Departments. The Miracle League of Concord is planning to build a custom-
designed baseball field that incorporates a cushioned synthetic turf. This will allow
children in wheelchairs and walkers to glide unrestricted without fear of injury. In other
words, it provides a level playing field where children with physical and mental
disabilities can hit, run and catch - just as they have envisioned in their dreams.

The proposal for Frank Liske Park is to create a field that will not only impact Miracle
League players, but others as well. The Miracle League's goal will be to play on
Saturdays for 8-10 weeks both in the spring and fall. As our numbers, we would begin to
play during the week as well. Weare partnering with Special Olympics of Cabarrus
County and other organizations to play sports on this unique surface, with the goal of
maximizing the use of the field. To best suit the cornmunity's needs, we plan to build a
200 ft. x 200 ft. playing surface that will be utilized for Miracle League Baseball, Special
Olympic floor hockey, and any other sport the could benefit from this type of field.

With help from the recreation departments of Cabarrus County and Concord, we are
planning to use the fourth softball field that currently is not being played on. Our general
construction plan would be to grade the field and asphalt the entire playing surface. We
would then add lights by replacing the existing wood poles between Field 1 and Field 4
and utilize the poles on the third base side currently lighting Field 3. There would be an
additional two poles added to the outfield to cover the back comer of the playing surface.
We will then erect a 6 ft. fence around the entire field utilizing the existing backstop with
the goal of the project to match the surrounding fields. The rubber synthetic turf would
be applied over the asphalt to have a consistent and sturdy surface that allows
wheelchairs and walkers to move freely without the worry of tripping over bases or
uneven ground. The final part of the project will be to pave a road from the existing

The Miracle League of Concord
120 Church St. N
Concord, NC 28025
(704) 795-2012
;:-/7
