Section III

Program Goal(s): The goals of the Teen Court program is to reduce crime committed by middle
and high school students in local communities served by the program while holding youth
accountable for their behavior and helping them realize the impact of those behaviors. Reduce
the caseload of intake counselors, juvenile court and district court so that they can focus on more
serious youth offenders. Promote education concerning the functions and operations ofthe
judicial system. Work to build competencies among youth through training to handle various
courtroom roles and improve communication and problem-solving skills. Teen Court provides a
meaningful forum for youth to practice and enhance newly-developed competencies. Promote
community service and restitution as a means of restorative justice for the victim and
community. Empower middle and high school students to take an active role in addressing crime
in their community while promoting community collaboration by involving community agencies
and adult volunteers. Strengthen the family unit through community resource referrals and
promote long-term behavioral change that leads to enhanced public safety.

,

1--4-
