Proclamation - American Stroke Month (May 2002) <br /> <br /> Mr. David Hampton, Assistant EMS Director, addressed the high rate of <br />strokes in North Carolina and reported on the stroke screenings planned in <br />Cabarrus County during the month of May. <br /> <br /> U~ON MOTION of Commissioner Privette, seconded by Commissioner Suggs <br />and unanimously carried, the Board adopted the following Proclamation. <br /> <br /> Resolution No. 2002-10 <br /> PROCLAMATION <br /> <br />WHEREAS, on behalf of the citizens of Cabarrus County, we are pleased to join <br />the American Stroke Association, a division of the American Heart Association <br />in celebrating May 2002 as American Stroke Month in Cabarrus County; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, acknowledging May 2002 offers advocates for stroke awareness an <br />opportunity to educate the public and policy makers about the devastating <br />effects of stroke; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, strokes are'the third leading cause of death in the United States <br />striking over 600,000 Americans each year; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, strokes are a leading cause of serious long-term disabilities with <br />about 4.5 million stroke survivors today; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the majority of Americans are not aware of their risk factors for a <br />stroke, nor are they aware of the signs and systems of an impending stroke; <br />and <br /> <br />WHEREA~, symptoms of stroke include: sudden numbness or weakness of the face, <br />arm or leg, especially on one side of the body; sudden confusion, =rouble <br />speaking or understanding; sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes; sudden <br />=rouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination; and sudden <br />severe headache with no known cause; and <br /> <br />W~EREAS, stroke leads to the death and disability of more =hah 29,000 <br />citizens of North Carolina each year; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, new and effective treatments have been developed to treat and <br />minimize the severity and damaging effects of strokes, but much more research <br />is needed; <br /> <br />W~EREAS, we urge all the citizens of our County to familiarize themselves <br />with the signs, symptoms, and risk factors associated with stroke so that we <br />might begin to reduce the devastating effects that a stroke makes on our <br />population. <br /> <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that we, =he Cabarrus County Board of <br />Commissioners, hereby proclaim the month of May 2002, as <br /> <br /> AMERICAN STROKE MONTH IN CABA~RUS COUNTY ~ <br /> <br /> /s/ Robert M.
