According to the survey results, 62 percent (62%) of the persons responding to the survey
reported that they were supportive of the proposed bus service. Thirty-eight percent (38%) do
not feel that it would be used efficiently and that the money that would be spent on a system
could not be justified. Sixty-seven percent (67%) of the 291 persons responding to question 5
stated that they would use public transportation services to travel to an from work (23%),
School (2%), Shopping (17%), Medical Service (6%), and Recreation (19%). Ninety-nine
percent of the persons surveyed currently have access to transportation. Approximately five
percent participate in car or van pooling for most of the workweek.

In general, the beginning/finish time for workers in the area is between 8:00am to 5:00pm.
Sixty-two percent (62%) of the persons surveyed arrive at work between 7:30am and 8:00am,
51 percent end between 4:30pm and 5:00pm. The highest travel times in the morning are
estimated between 7:30am and 8:00am and 4:30pm to 6:00pm in the evenings.

2. Employee Zip Code Survey

Another way to get a better understanding of employee commute patterns (origin - destination
pairs) is to request information from major employers in the area. This is, of course, very
confidential information so it is requested at a very aggregate level and in a way that it does
not require significant effort from the human resources departments. This method asks for a
frequency distribution of employees by residence zip code. This information was requested
from several major employers in the study area and four responded:

· Cabarrus County
· Northeast Medical Center
· Pillowtex
· S &DCoffee

1,085 employees
2,894 employees
3,070 employees
228 employees.

These four have a total of 7,277 employees. A map was produced showing the major zip
codes from which employees travel to go to work. This map includes a total of 5,637
employees or 77.5 percent of the total. The major zip codes were 28081, located northeast of
Kannapolis, and 28025, and located southeast of Concord. Of particular interest is the 203
persons (3.6 percent of the total surveyed) that travel to these major area employers from
Charlotte zip codes. This would seem to indicate that there could be a market for work trips
both to and from Cabarrus County and that customers of the recently instituted commuter
service connecting to Charlotte should be surveyed to find out if additional connections in
Concord or Kannapolis would be of benefit to them or others they know. Also, their
employers should be surveyed to identify any additional markets that could be served by
scheduled bus service.

What the survey does not indicate, however, is whether or not any of the employees might
become customers and under what conditions. It does show that there are concentrations of

Gunnel:t Fleming
ENGINEERS AND PLANNERS
