both employers and employees that might support work trips if the services met the
requirements of getting them to work on time (given all of the different shift start times) and
ran often enough to give them flexibility in choosing which bus to take.

This information was used in developing alternative bus routes for consideration prior to doing
detailed route analysis. After your selection of four or five basic routes, additional service
details will be determined for final analysis and review.

Route Alternatives

There are four basic service categories that could be considered for Cabarrus/S. Rowan:
· Work trips
· Social service trips
· Medical trips
· Shopping trips.

Each of these trip types will serve a particular segment of the population as evidenced by the
survey responses received to date. Also, the physical relationship of origins and destinations
in the area tend to lend themselves to scheduled bus operations. The following subsections
describe each trip type (or combinations of trip types) and a proposed service scenario to
connect major origins and destinations.

Work Trips

The 1-85/US-29 corridor, while fairly wide within the study area, contains many employers
with many different employment patterns and characteristics. Also, if the major employer zip
code survey is an accurate indication, the majority of their employees also live within or
adjacent to the corridor. These characteristics lend themselves to linear routes (or pinched
loops) rather than elongated or more circular loops.

The first proposed route would connect China Grove (perhaps at a park and ride lot),
Pillowtex, Cannon Village, the Kannapolis Shopping Center, and the Cabarrus County Human
Services Center with the Northeast Medical Center. It would also provide a transfer
opportunity with the Charlotte service.

Route Two would start at the Medical Center and proceed south on US-29/US-601 to SR-73 to
the Senior Center, and then proceed back through town using Corban Street to US-29 to either
Wal-Mart or Kmart. This route connects with the Charlotte service at the Medical Center and
at the shopping (and employmen0 center(s) at the south end. It also provides through links to
social service agencies.

The third route links Wal-Mart/Kmart with the University Research Park at the south end of
the study area. This route would also serve Philip Morris and the Concord Mills shopping

Gnnnett Fleming
ENGINEERS AND PLANNERS
