GIS Public Access <br />Using Extranet Technology <br /> <br />Cabarrus County <br />North Carolina <br /> <br />5. The Results / Success of the Program <br /> <br />North Carolina's Public Records Law inspired Cabarrus County to implement Internet <br />access. This program is the first implementation of our plan to use the Internet as an <br />extension of our own network into the homes and offices of our citizens. This Extranet <br />enables cost effective easy access to Cabarms County's public records. <br /> <br />Cabarrus County's foresight to establish an Internet presence enabled us to quickly take <br />advantage of ESRI's new Internet Map Server and Map Object technology. The <br />deployment of this program provides easy GIS public access and meets Cabarrus <br />County's Interact goals to: <br /> <br />Increase operating efficiency by providing: · Maps and associated information previously only available from Land Records <br /> and GIS depariments located at the governmental center <br /> * Maps and associated information available 24 hours a day 7 days a week <br /> <br />Enhances and leverages existing infrastructure, allowing a heterogeneous user base by: <br /> · Using EXTRANET technology to distribute county data located on the RS/6000, <br /> PC and mainframe computer platforms <br /> · Providing citizens access to county maps and associated data from their homes <br /> and offices using their existing computer hardware and an Internet connection <br /> <br />Cabarrus County's GIS Public Access averages 44 users a day. The GIS map server has <br />recorded hits from 28 countries and 43 North American States / Provinces. While the <br />program is being accessed globally, the most active areas are Virginia, North Carolina <br />and South Carolina respectively.
