CHARGE

Study the issues of air quality. Review trends in technology, including
experimental fuels, vehicles, roadways, pedestrian sidewalks, and
bikeways.

PRINCIPLES

A good environment is an integral part of making this region a viable
place to live and enhances economic development.

The Charlotte region is comprised of 30 cities and 7 counties in 2 states.
Factors influencing air quality do not have boundaries and air quality
is a concern of the entire region. Further there must be an integrated
approach to transportation planning for the entire region.

The Charlotte urban area is presently classified as a non-attainment
area for ozone standards and could face a federal mandate to improve
its air quality.

The Charlotte region is a rapidly growing area which may face
additional air quality problems due to this growth.

The subcommittee recommends the use of alternative fuels because
petroleum is a non-renewable natural resource.

There is no definite current data showing one alternative fuel to be
better than another. Fleet and other purchasers of alternative fuel
vehicles should consider their needs and the environmental require-
ments when purchasing alternative fuel vehicles.

Hard cost/benefit data for environmental recommendations is not
available. Any analysis of cost/benefit data must take into account
benefits that are not quantifiable.
