Basic Local Immunization Services:

ae

To eliminate barriers that delay or prevent delivery of
immunizations, local health departments should do the following:

1)

2)

3)

4)

5)

Provide on-site immunizations during all hours the health
department is open.

Provide walk-in immunizations during the health department
working hours~

If appointments are used, clients should be able to schedule _
an appointment within one week of request.

Immunizations visits should be kept brief. Administration
of needed vaccines should not be contingent on enrollment in -
a well-baby program unless enrollment is immediately
available. Waiting times should be no more than thirty -
minutes and ideally fifteen minutes or less. The actual --
immunization should be completed within thirty minutes and
ideally should take no more than fifteen minutes.

Whenever possible immunizations should be provided as an
integral part of other health services, such as well child
care and WIC. Referral of patients within the health
department should be minimized and, when necessary, 'patients
internally referred should be "fast tracked" to avoid waits
and rescheduling.

DEHNR 3300 (Revised 2/90)
Genera] Services Division (Review 1/95)

Reviewed by

InitiaLs Date
