<br /> The Hazardous Wast~ Management Commission today
<br /> released a statewide map showing the application of its
<br /> second set of site selection criteria.
<br />
<br /> The Commission's second set of site selection criteria
<br /> excludes from consideration for the location of a hazardous
<br /> waste facility areas located:
<br /> (1) on the ~eological formations of Castle Hayne;
<br /> Shady Dolomite; and Murphy Marble, Andrews
<br /> Formation and Nottoly Quartzite, Undivided;
<br /> within 10 miles from the oenterline of tho Blue
<br /> Ridge Parkway;
<br /> (3) within five miles of the State boundary;
<br /> (4) within the corporate limits, effective November 7,
<br /> 1989, of a municipality escopt on lend zoned, as
<br /> of November 7, 1989, %o psrmlt industrial uses;
<br /> and,
<br /> (5) on a general soil association 'type that floods in
<br /> moro then 10 percent of the erea.

<br /> Map. A is a cumulative map of %he total statewide area
<br /> excluded by the second set of criteria, and amounts to
<br /> 8,886,935 acres, or about 26 percent of the state.
<br />
<br /> Map B is a cumulative map showing the total statewide
<br /> area excluded by the first and second sets of criteria, and
<br /> amounts to 18,668,505 acres, or about 55 percent of the
<br /> state. Acreages of overlapping areas have not been
<br /> duplicated in the cumulative area excluded.
<br />
<br /> Two entire counties, Avery and Alleghany, were excluded
<br /> from consideration by the second set of criteria. The 'first
<br /> set of criteria previously had excluded Camden, Currituck,
<br /> Dare, Hyde, Pamlico, Pasquotank, Tyrell, Vance, Warren and
<br /> Washington counties.
