A~rORNEY AT LAW

CONCORD, NORTH CAROLINA 2so26-1n3
August 30~ 1989 PHONE 1704l 785'321!

Cabarrus County Board of Commissioners
Attn: James Lentz, Chairman
Cabarrus County Courthouse I\BB ~ '~ ~9B9 '
Concord, North Carolina 28025 ..., j --.- . ~
Re: Extension of North Carolina 136

Dear Mr. Lentz:

I am writing concerning the above matter which I am informed was
presented to the Board of Commissioners several months ago by
representatives of the North Carolina Department of Transportation. For
your information, I represent a group of concerned citizens,
organizations, and other persons who are opposed to the present plan of
extending North Carolina 136 and depositing the traffic at the
intersection of Old Airport Road and Union Street, South.

It is our understanding that the original plans for North Carolina 136
included extending it directly to Highway 49, For reasons unclear to my
clients, the new proposal does not extend North Carolina 136 directly to
Highway 49; instead, it extends it to the intersection of Old Airport
Road and Union Street, South affecting a major portion of the front
parking lot of Center United Methodist Church, the child care center and
the existing convenience snore,

I am sure as a residenu ~n the county, you are familiar with the
intersection further down Union Street, South with the Highway 601
Bypass and the literal nightmare that exists at the present time during
peak periods of traffic. It would not take very much imagination to
view that particular intersection with additional traffic as a result of
the North Carolina 136 planned extension. Needless to say, it would be
an absolute bottleneck and it would be easy to conc'lude a much more
dangerous and congested area than presently exists.

My clients have requested that I appear before the Board of
Commissioners, assuming they would permit us an opportunity to speak,
and voice our concerns. Our ultimate goal is to seek your support in
communicating with the North Carolina Department of Transportation prior
to the public hearing scheduled some time in October. 1989, specific
date unknown at the present.

I would not expect my comments to be lengthy and would respectfully
request an audience at your September 18, 1989 meeting.

EHF:tdm
