The Study Commission was also provided data on growth patterns by township in
Cabarrus County. The following table indicates the 1980 populations the 1970-1980
population growth rates and growth projections to the year 2000.

Population by Township

Population Projected Percentage Growth Proiected
Population Rate Growth

1970 1980 1990 2000 1970-1980 1970-2000

1. Because the census figure for 1970 also included the small town ot Enochvill% the same
geographic area was included tot the 1980 census figure. Rowan County does not have population
projections for this area for 1990 and 2000.

~ These county total figures includ, e the Kannap01is area that lies in Rowan County.

The percentage growth rate indicates that the western townships ot Harrisburg and
Poplar Tent experienced the most rapid growth during the 1970-1980 decade, and
projections indicate a substantial continuation ot this trend to the year 2000. The
projections also suggest that more of this growth will spillover into Odell and Midland,
the other two western townships~ during the two decades from 1980 to 2000. The
projected growth tot the two largest population concentrations in the county, Kannapolis
and Concord~ is relatively modest over the time span considered. Another way of
viewing this growth ditterentlal is to look at the change in the distribution of the
population within the County 6vet the thirty-year period being considered. In 1970~ the
tour western townships contained 15.7% ot the County's population. By 1980~ this
number had grown to 23.2% ot the popu!ation~ and the projections indicate that by the
year 2000 the population in the tour townships will be 33.9%. In 1970~ the Kannapolis and
Concord townships had 62.6% of the County's population. This decreased to 51/.2% in
1980 and is projected to decrease tb/33.7% in 2000.
