DIVISION OP FOP~EST RESOURCES <br /> APRIL - bgkY - JUNE~ 1981 <br /> <br /> FOREST <br /> <br />Received 19 forest ms~nafement requests and have serviced 15 this quarter. <br />This consists of site preparation for planbing~ planting tree seedlings~ <br />pulpwood ~-nd sawbimber marking~ thinning pine stands, s_nd harvesting timber. <br />There were 254 acres involved. <br /> <br />Ninety-t~u'ee acres of sa~Lmber 'and pulpwood were marked and designated for <br />thir~ninS or haz"~esting. Twenty-nine acres were thim~ed, ~ith approximately <br />256 cords cut. This brought about $9,984. to landowners from the sale of <br />pulpwood <br /> <br />One hundred and seventeen acres wore harvested, which cut 336,000 board feet <br />of sawbimber~ bringing about $17,200 to landowners from the sale of their <br />timber° Along %rlth the sawtimber, 100 cords of palpwood were cut~ bringing <br />about $3~000o Ooe hundred twenty-five co~ds were cut for fire wood, ~nich <br />brought about $375.00~ <br /> <br />.Fighty-foum acres were prepared for planting, which consisted of using a bull- <br />dozer ~-scs~lping, end fuel ~ood removal. (~e hundred forty-two acres were <br />planted in Loblolly pines. <br /> <br />FIRE WOOD' <br /> <br />We assisted ten l~ndowuers in setting fire wood for this coming vlnter. We <br />have a list o$ citizens who wish to get more this fall. There are ~eout 60 <br />acres cf fire wood available to people who w~ut to cut fuel wood for this wtnter. <br />This is located at the Iredell County line. <br /> <br />FO~T INSECTS AND DISE^SES <br /> <br />A few new ~ctive spots of Southern Pine Beetle have been reported this quarter. <br />We will not be able to tell how bad it will be until the mAdd!e of the s'mm,er. <br />Five spots were cut s_nd salvaged this quarter~ %;nich cut 25 cords and 400 board <br />feet. Tkis brought about $1,200 from the ssle of beetle-infested wood. April <br />mhd May brought a problem with the European Pine Sawfly. These sawflies were <br />defoliating Virginia s-nd Shortleaf pines. Not much dmnage was done) about 90 <br />percent of the trees have new growth coming in at tkis ti3~e. This problem was <br />reported to the Pest Control Forester at Morganton. <br /> <br /> <br />
