Land Acquisition - Kannapolis Area

The need for recreation land in the Kannapolis area must
receive a high priority. Two major publically ~wned land
areas should be considered, and if at all possible, both
should be acquired outright or otherwise committed to
future public use. The first of these areas is Lake
Concord Formerly the principal water supply fo-~--~he City
'of Con. ford, Lake Concord contains 262 acres of land and
80 acres of water. This area zs extremely well-located
to serve residents of both Concord and Kannapolis. The
dam which impounds this Lake is in need of major repairs,
and estimates have varied greatly as to the cost of repairs.
It is strongly recormnended that the County acquire title
to this property by purchase or lease and that it be made
available for public use.

The second major area is Lake Fisher. This Lake is also
strategically located. With ei~miles of shoreline, it
represents an opportunity for the provision of a variety
of waterbased recreations. Since this is Class I water,
its potential recreation uses are somewhat limited; however~
it still represents an extremely valuable resource which
should be utilized. The area comprises 48 acres of land
and 277 acres of water. As in the case of Lake Concord,
this land should be controlled by the County and made
accessible to the public.

In the event that these two properties are not made available
to the public, approximately 110 acres of land for active
recreation and 300 acres of land for passive recreation
should be acquired in the Kannapolis area, and if at all
possible, potential sites for water activities should be
utilized.

Estimated Cost - No Estimate

VII-3

I
