materials were used to depict good conservation versus no conservation <br /> of land, buildings, trees, fences, lawns, etc. The Dist-~ict Won a <br /> prize for the exhibit. <br /> <br /> Mr. and Mrs. John Barrier were presented a plaeue honoring them as <br /> the CONSERVATION FARM FAMILY OF THE YEAR (1979). <br /> <br /> Mr. and Mrs. W. M. Teeter were presented a plaque honoring them with <br /> the WILDLIFE AWARD for 1979. <br /> <br />The conservation tours of approximately 900 eighth grade students <br />were held October 8-12, 1979. Supervisors, Associate Supervisors, <br />Watershed CommissiOners, SCS personnel, other agencies in the <br />County and extra help took part in the tours and explained briefly <br />the functions of the District, Watershed commission, Wildlife, <br />Soils, Forestry and all phases of conservation related programs. <br /> <br />The Annual speech contest was held in the new Agriculture Center on <br />December 11, 1979. <br /> <br />First place: Hank Alston ($25.00) Second Place: Ginger GallOway <br />($15.00) and Third Place: Susan Eudy ($10~DD). Individual winners <br />of $5.00 was awarded to Micbelle Farrell and Alan Strickland bOth <br />of Hartsell School. <br /> <br />Judges for our speech contest were: <br /> <br /> Miss Marcelle Milloway-Cabarrus County Commissioner <br /> Dr..Nelson R. Nunnally-Area VIII Chairman <br /> Thomas H. Wetmore-Area Conservationist (SCS) <br /> <br />Blankets were purchased by the Dis'trict and presented as gifts to the <br />three judges for their participation and interest in the speech contest. <br /> <br />Hank Alston (first place winner) was accompanied by Harold Nash to <br />attend the Area VIII speech contest in Charlotte. Hank was second <br />place winner in the contest. <br /> <br />The District purchased 2500 Soil Stewardship book markers that were <br />distributed to 50 churches in the County to be used during Soil <br />Stewardship Week. <br /> <br />Rev. Hogan, BillY Hull and Ronnie Stephens planned the Land Jndging <br />contest which was held on Troy Cook's property on March 26, ].980. <br />Mt. Pleasant High Sci~oo! was first place winner of $30.00 and the <br />individual winner from bit. Pleasant received $10.00. <br /> <br />Jeff Howell represented the Cabarrus District at the Resource <br />Conservation Workshop held in Raleigh June 16-20, 1980. Jeff gave <br />an excellent report of his activities during his week in Raleigh. <br /> <br />Rev. Hogan and the District Clerk completed the C%barrus Soil and <br />Water District Plan of Operation for 1980-gl. Copies were distributed <br />to members of both Boards. <br /> <br />John Hammi]~, Sr. was se]eqted as nominee for ~th¢ District's Wildlife <br />award for 1980. <br /> <br /> <br />
