A motion was made and unanimously passed that the District sponsor <br /> and finance the followin§ programs for 19~0-81: (1) Land 3udEing <br /> contest (2) Soil S~ewardship Neek (3) Conservation Resource Workshop <br /> (4) Agriculture Fair Exhibit (5) Conservation tours (6)Annual Speech <br /> contest (7) Conservation Farm Family of the Year (8) Wildife Award <br /> and (9) other educational projects requested. <br /> <br /> Rev. Hogan has done an excellent job with the educational and public <br /> relations activities. The Board of supervisors expresses their <br /> appreciation to Rev. Hogan for b~ing a part of the Soil and Water <br /> District for the past four years~ His interest and work with this <br /> part of the district program has been very rewarding for the Board, <br /> Rev. Hogan:s term expires this year and he did not choose to file <br /> again for re-election. We hope he continues his interest in <br /> conservation and finds time to be with us again in the future. <br /> <br /> LAND-USE REPORTS AND ACTIVITIES ( A. FranCe Herrin, Jr,) <br /> <br /> Mr, Herrin expressed that Long Term Agreements with District Cooperators <br /> is an excellent way to apply good conservation practices with cost <br /> sharing from ASCS. <br /> <br /> It was reported that-current data reveals Cabarrus County to be a <br />' leader in soil and water conservation practices ~nd cited district <br /> examples of these practices, Mr, Herrin stated that other counties <br /> are now including wildlife habitat planning as a part of long range <br /> conservation plans, a practice in force for over-20 years in Cabarrus <br /> County. <br /> <br /> A workshop was held at the Best Western Motel in Burlington~ The <br /> workshop was sponsored by the Federal Interagency National Agricultural <br /> Lands Study, The topic of the workshop was'on agricult'ural land <br /> losses on the nation's present and future abilities to produce food <br /> ,and fiber because of the trend toward urbanization. <br /> <br /> Suggested reading material in the November issue of the Progressive <br /> Farmer on loss of valuable~farm land was noted by Mr. Herrin. <br /> <br /> Over 200 phamplets of "Where Have Our Farmlands Gone?" were distributed <br /> to citizens in all areas of Cabmrrus Connty. <br /> <br /> Mr. Herrin made copies available for each member present at one of <br /> the meetings on Saving Farms and Farmlands. The community guide <br /> contained an article concerning zoning and land preservation for <br /> farm use. <br /> <br /> No till planting was reported as being the highlight and primary work <br /> done in Cabarrus County this Spring. <br /> <br /> <br />
