-7- <br /> <br /> Mr. Herrin brought attention to the major concern in the County of <br /> erosion and the tremendous amount of soil loss, Conservation needs <br /> were discussed and supervisors were made aware that good conservation <br /> practices should be promoted to prevent erosion of our soil. <br /> <br /> Mr. Herrin reported on a meeting held on May 14th at the Agriculture <br /> Center with the ASCS and the Extension Service personnel to discuss <br /> some issues and alternatives involved in classifying land. <br /> <br /> One comment from Mr. Herrin was that land use is becoming a critical <br /> problem. More farmland is being re~laced with urban and commercial <br /> building. Prices of food are continually increasing and the outlook <br /> seems to ~e that food could get to be in short supply as more <br /> agricultural land is going to other land uses. <br /> <br /> A suggestion was made by Mr. Herrin that the District work closely <br /> with Planning Department and other organizationB of similar nature <br /> to keep informed of ].and uses in Cabarrus County° <br /> <br />WATERSHED ACTIVITIES: ( C. Overcash) <br /> <br /> At the beginning of the year, a preliminary investigation report on <br /> the Cdddle-Coldwater-Dutch Buffalo creeks watershed project was <br /> received and requests were made to pian public .hearings° <br /> <br /> 150 letters were mailed to landowners giving them an opportunity to <br /> review the watershed information. Meetingf were held in four sections <br /> of the County and attendance was more than expected at each meeting° <br /> <br />A public hearing was held on AugUst 7, 1979 at the' Cabarrus County <br />Courthouse. Approximately 125 people attended~ The Watershed <br />Planning staff of Raleigh was present to review the information and <br />answer questions from landowners involved in the structure sites° <br /> <br />The County Commissioners, Watershed Commissioners, District Supervisors <br />and SCS personnel conducted a tour of the structure sites on August 20, <br />1979. The County Commissioners unanimously voted to sponsor the water- <br />shed project. <br /> <br />Numerous newspaper articles have been released covering the four <br />community meetings and the public hearing. <br /> <br />Written notice was given to the Soil Conservation Service requesting <br />that SCS proceed with the development of the watershed work plan. <br /> <br />I. November, the alternative chosen by the sponsors of the watershed <br />project was approved by the Cabarrus County Commissioners. <br /> <br />The Csbarrus County Commissioners designated that the County Recreation <br />Department and the County Planning Department provide needed information <br />on specific structure sites. <br /> <br /> <br />
