Dr. Fries reviewed the history of the schools in the
County and presented a booklet prepared by Mr. George Griffin, Architect,
which illustrated the need for renovation work at the three schools. Dr.
Fries reported that the cost of renovation of the schools would total
approximately $498,975. Installation of a sprinkler system in each of the
schools as recommended by the County Fire Marshal would create an additional
cost of 85¢ per square foot to instal~ the system plus a $10,000 hook-up fee
at each school. He requested that the Board approve this appropriation of
funds for the County School System in addition to the annual appropriation
of $250,000 by the~County. In his presentation to the Board, Dr. Fries also
addressed the importance for the Board to consider such long range needs as
rewiring of Hartsell School, a preparation kitchen for Mt. Pleasant Elementary
School, and the possible construction of a new school complex in the western
section of the County.
No action was taken, by the Board at this time regarding this request.
for funding the renovation work. Commissioner Cook asked that the Board of
Education prepare a recommendation regarding the rating of priorities for
renovation of the three schools. A decision regarding funding is needed by
March in order that the work can be completed during the upcoming summer months.
Dr. Fries reported that the Board of Education had agreed to sell the
Odell Teacherage and asked the Board's permission to proceed with the sale
of this school property. He stated the Board of Education had set a $20,000
minimum for the sale of the building with the money derived from the sale to
be used at Odell School.
UPON MOTION of Commissioner Cook, seconded by Commissioner Lentz and
unanimously car~ried, the Board authorized the Cabarrus County Board of Education
to sell the Odell Teacherage.
UPON MOTION of Commissioner Cook, seconded by Commissioner Payne and
unanimously carried, the Board set a public hearing for 10:00 A.M. on March 1,
1982, for the naming of an unnamed road as Meismer Lane.
UPON MOTION of Commissioner Cook, seconded by Commissioner Lentz and
unanimously carried, the Board approved the addition of Riding Trail Lane
to the state road system.
UPON MOTION of Commissioner Cook, seconded by Commissioner Lentz and
unanimously carried, the Board approved the appointment of Mr. Jerry C.
