During discussion Dr. Pilkington and Ms. Yates <br />responded to questions from the Board. <br />FY 2016 -17 Budget Changes - Continued <br />A brief discussion ensued regarding Commissioner Poole's request to adjust <br />the school system's budget to include funding for an additional month of <br />employment for school counselors (CCS $37,800.00 and KCS $4,835.00). It was the <br />consensus of the Board to include the funding in the proposed budget. <br />There was also discussion regarding mental health responders. <br />n --. 1, <br />p.m. <br />The Board took a short break at 5:51 p.m. The meeting resumed at 6:19 <br />Fire Districts - Presentation of FY 2017 Budget Request <br />Midland Volunteer Fire Department <br />Steve Langer, Fire Marshal, reported the Midland Volunteer Fire Department <br />(VFD) is requesting a 1.6 -cent increase, bringing their fire district tax rate <br />to 8 cents and generating an additional $88,076.00 on the tax rate. <br />Midland VFD Fire Chief, Allen Burnette presented a request for a 1.6 -cent <br />increase for the Midland VFD District. He reported the increase will be used <br />to increase coverage by adding three around - the -clock firemen to Midland Fire <br />Station 2 on NC Highway 24/27. He cited the need for the additional staffing <br />is due to growth in the area. <br />A discussion ensued. During discussion Chief Burnette and Fire Marshal <br />Langer responded to questions from the Board. <br />Pam Dubois, Senior Deputy County Manager, advised a spreadsheet of the FY <br />2017 Fire Districts Estimates has been provided to the Board. <br />„ Ecnnuled V21W 5.. of 2 -15 -16 <br />„ `1,;11 wmdedm M6 &9dge1 OT&nawe iwhlde5 D3MV <br />Northeast Volunteer Fire Department <br />Fire Marshal Steve Langer reported the Northeast Volunteer Fire Department <br />(NEFD VFD) is requesting an increase of 2 cents, bringing their fire district <br />tax rate to 12.7 cents and generating an additional $22,496.00 on the tax rate. <br />Pat Bergeron, NEFD VFD Board President, expressed appreciation for the <br />rate increase from the previous year. <br />Kevin Kirk, NEFD Fire Chief, reviewed how revenues were spent in the prior <br />year. He stated an additional 2 cents would be used to add a new fire engine to <br />assist with lowering their ISO rating. He added that the Department is <br />requesting assistance from the County in the form of a $415,000 15 -year non - <br />interest loan to pay for the new engine.
