April 20, 2015 (Regular Meeting) Page 2352 <br />to assess, to advocate for, and to review every patient's physical activity <br />program during every comprehensive visit. <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Cabarrus County Board of <br />Commissioners do hereby proclaimm the month of May, 2015 as <br />EXERCISE IS MEDICINE® MONTH <br />in Cabarrus County and encourage all citizens to participate in activities <br />and observances relating to Exercise is Medicine® Month in the interests of <br />better health and quality of life for all. <br />Adopted this the 20th day of April, 2015. <br />/s/ Stephen M. Morris, Chairman <br />Cabarrus County Board of Commissioners <br />(C -3) Cabarrus Health Alliance - National Bike to School Day Proclamation <br />George Berger, Cabarrus Health Alliance, presented an overview of how <br />transportation of students to and from school has changed over the years. He <br />stressed the importance of daily physical activity among children and youth <br />of our community and the benefits of walking and biking to school. <br />Chairman Morris read the proclamation aloud. <br />UPON MOTION of Vice Chairman Poole seconded by Commissioner Honeycutt <br />and unanimously carried, the Board adopted the following proclamation. <br />Proclamation No. 2015 -05 <br />National Bike to School Day Proclamation <br />WHEREAS, a lack of physical activity plays a leading role in rising <br />rates of obesity, diabetes and other health problems among children and being <br />able to bicycle or walk to school offers an opportunity to build activity <br />into daily routine; and <br />WHEREAS, driving students to school by private vehicle contributes to <br />traffic congestion and air pollution; and <br />WHEREAS, an important role for parents and caregivers is to encourage <br />children to be aware of the challenges and dangers that they face on their <br />trip to school each day and the health and environmental risks related to <br />physical inactivity and air pollution; and <br />WHEREAS, community leaders and parents can determine the "bikeability" <br />of their community and identify any potential challenges to safe bicycling <br />using a bikeability checklist; and <br />WHEREAS, community members and leaders should include bike and <br />walkability in the decision making process and strategic planning process to <br />enable children to safely bicycle and walk in our communities and develop a <br />list of suggestions for improvements that can be executed over time; and <br />WHEREAS, children, parents and community leaders around the country are <br />joining together to evaluate bicycling and walking conditions in their <br />communities. <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Cabarrus County Board of <br />Commissioners do hereby proclaim May b, 2015, as "National Bike to School <br />Day" in Cabarrus County, North Carolina and encourage everyone to consider <br />the safety and health of children today and every day. <br />Adopted this the 20th day of April, 2015. <br />/s/ Stephen M.
