December 15, 2014 (Regular Meeting) Page 2222 <br />together to address important community issues and provide service to their <br />community; and <br />WHEREAS, the third Monday in January has been established as a national <br />holiday to observe the anniversary of Dr. King's birth. <br />NOW THEREFORE, the Cabarrus County Board of Commissioners hereby <br />proclaims Monday, January 19, 2015 as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day in <br />Cabarrus County and encourages all citizens to join in the special programs <br />and ceremonies to be held on January 16 -18 honoring the life and work of Dr. <br />King and his legacy of peace and equality for all citizens. <br />Adopted this the 15 day of December, 2014. <br />/s/ Stephen M. Morris, Chairman <br />Cabarrus County Board of Commissioners <br />Attest: <br />/s/ Megan Smit <br />Megan Smit, Clerk to the Board <br />(C -2) EMS - Recognition of EMS Personnel for Recent Competition Victory <br />Alan Thompson, EMS (Emergency Medical Services) Director, recognized <br />paramedics Lieutenant Will Cannon and Sergeant Jonathan Maulden for their <br />victory at the 2014 Carolina's Paramedic Competition held in Columbia, South <br />Carolina. <br />Chairman Morris commended Lieutenant Cannon and Sergeant Maulden for <br />their victory and service to the citizens of Cabarrus County. <br />(C -3) Planning and Development - Soil and Water - Recognition of Contestants <br />in the NC Association of Soil and Water Conservation Districts ,Annual <br />Conservation Education Competition <br />Dennis Testerman, Senior Resource Conservation Specialist, stated the <br />Cabarrus Soil and Water Conservation District has cc- sponsored conservation <br />education contests throughout most of its 50 years of existence. The 2014- <br />2015 theme was "Wetlands are Wonderful ". The local conservation essay and <br />public speaking contest was held on December 9 <br />Hannah Hursey, Resource Conservation Coordinator, presented information <br />regarding opportunities for learning at the Conservation Field School at <br />Clarke Creek. She then recognized winners of the 2014 -2015 NC Association of <br />Soil and Water Conservation Districts Annual Conservation Education <br />Competition. <br />The 2014 -2015 Conservation Contest Winners are: <br />24rd Annual Essay Contest - 6th Grade <br />1st place Justice Hatcher, J. N. Fries Magnet (Leslie Griffin & Nancy Kapp, <br />teachers) <br />2nd place Justice Ivy, C. C. Griffin Middle (Jon Caskey & Kristine Sidbeck, <br />teachers) <br />3rd place Nevaeh Greene, Concord Middle (Jamie Mabry, teacher) <br />Marissa Stephens, Carolina International (Sarah Grafton, teacher) <br />46th Annual Public Speaking Contest - 7th and 8th Grades <br />Seventh Grade <br />1st place Tyler Pickett, Mount Pleasant Middle (Caitlyn Sirse, teacher) <br />2nd place Bryce Biehle, JN Fries Magnet (Elyse Koenig & Katie.
